Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre is a Latin American artist based in London since 1995. Her practice is concerned with issues of social responsibility and citizenship, through an examination of the changing role and status of creative professions in our society. Her work explores the dynamics of spontaneous networking and sharing amongst people, through media such as live events, the Internet or publications. Recent art projects include a local history project with East London communities for the Whitechapel Art Gallery Centennary, a writing commission for [AN] the Artists Information Company, documenting a project of artist Anna Best, and a commission from Brigthon Street Arts Festival in which she worked with a group of art students from Brighton University. She is currently undertaking a residency at Gasworks Studios, collaborating with Cuban artist Inti Henandez in an art project involving and supporting the Latin American community in Lambeth. Smoke .(Albion Inferno).A journey of conversations with the people of Brighton, exploring the collective memory of the day The Royal Albion Hotel burnt to the ground. The emerging story of this architectonic landmark - an intrigue of business interest, redevelopers and listed heritage - culminated with a public performance in the beach in which the artist recreated the vision of a city full of smoke using a theatre smoke machine to jettison smoke clouds into the sea breeze.Mona Lisa .(in collaboration with Ella Gibbs)A spagetti diner for all the participants and guests at an international and intergenerational meeting of performance artists. The dinner was cooked by the artists in the open air at the sea front, and served at sunset at a long table placed in the deserted beach.
complain!A work for the people of Brixton, the artists set up a stall in Brixton market offering a free service writing complaint letters. Over a week, the artists wrote over 20 customized complaint letters covering issues as varied as housing, litter, parking meters, public toilets, street preachers and pricing and measures used at a large supermarket chain. All letters were posted to the relevant person and department, and all the exchanges with the public were documented by the artist in writing and logged into a database.
