Chang-Jin Lee's conceptual installations attempt to break the boundaries between art and everyday life. As a result of her multicultural background and experiences, she is interested in investigating cultural, social and political aspects of our era and environment. Many of her works actively invite and encourage the viewer to participate in the process. Lee uses everyday objects such as toilet paper, chewing gum and other domestic materials, reworking them to create participatory dialogues.
Homeland Security Garden’ ( above image and below right ) is an interactive installation which explores what emergency means to individuals from diverse backgrounds and professions in this complex time of political and psychological in/security.
‘DNA : Making A Mark’ ( top right image ) is an interactive piece which celebrate individualism and identity. DNA testing is done by extracting DNA from chewing gum. In my piece, people chew and stick gum to clear plastic grids on the wall, and sign their names- thus encoding DNA, fingerprints, gesture, and signature all at once. Over time, the grids transform into an abstract artwork which encodes individuality and gesture - a collective portrait of people's personal expressions. - - - ‘24/7,’ ( top left image ) comments on the nature of the sweatshop. Two Sewing machines run continuously, one sewing brightly colored threads onto an endless loop, the other sewing thread onto rolls of toilet paper which pile up in a giant mound on the floor.
