Recent exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Glasgow have also examined the language of print and its wider cultural associations. In particular, these exhibitions addressed the ways in which print relates to sign systems including flag semaphore, printed and patchwork patterning and the letter forms of the Latin alphabet.

Born in Ottawa, Canada, and currently based in Glasgow, Ciara Phillips studied Fine Art at Queen's University, Kingston (BFA 2000) and at the Glasgow School of Art (MFA 2004). Recent exhibitions include: Zwischenraum : Space Between, Der Kunstverein, Hamburg (2010), Optimism and its signs at Atelier am Eck, Düsseldorf (2010), Every Woman a Signal Tower at the Glasgow Print Studio (part of the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2010) and Vocal Sans with Jane Topping at 48 King Street (2010). Ciara was recently awarded the Anna Löbner Glasgow/Düsseldorf Exchange Residency supported by WASPS, Glasgow and Kulturamt Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf, and was part of the Zwischenraum : Space Between project at Der Kunstverein, Hamburg curated by Annette Hans, Jamie Kenyon (SWG3, Glasgow) and Anne Szefer Karlsen (Hordaland Art Centre, Bergen).

As a response to the curatorial framework outlined for the Zwischenraum : Space Between residency and exhibition at Der Kunstverein, Hamburg, which aimed to examine, “the potential of the exhibition format as a site of production and framework for collaboration” Ciara set up a screenprinting workshop in the Kunstverein's main gallery space for the two-month duration of the project. Over the course of the exhibition Workshop was used daily to produce new monoprinted works in addition to posters made to advertise the exhibition's public programme of lectures, performances and events. The posters were realized in collaboration with the other artists and curators involved directly in Zwischenraum [Oliver Bulas, Nick Evans, Annette Hans, Julia Horstmann, Alon Levin, Ingrid Lønningdal and Anne Szefer Karlsen] and other invited participants including: students from the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Laura Aldridge, Beate Anspach, Corinna Koch, Anke Fischer, Hella Gerlach, Espen Hangård, Michael Phillips, Roman Schramm, Paul Sochacki, Michael Stumpf, Gavin Wade and Jochen Weber.
