Focusing on political, economic, and historical concerns Sholette’s varied activities involve collaborative social organizing, critical writing, teaching, and producing studio-based artworks that explore a variety of "debased" cultural forms including scale model hobbies and "B" movie trailers, as well as souvenirs and plastic figurines. His work is inspired by critics such as Walter Benjamin and Roland Barthes who argued that the most sentimental and debased of objects often reflect contemporary society better than those typically featured in museums. As theorist Jeffrey Skoller put it, Sholette’s “counterpractices have been less concerned with the commodification of culture and artistic auteurism than with working in multiple ways to create an arts culture committed to critical practice.” (Skollers full text is available here: http://www.gregorysholette.com/?page_id=43 )
