There is no inherent meaning to life.
Life is suffering.
I subscribe to these core existential notions.
The suffering does give us “meaning”, that means so much to us, but it is also painful.
I have been in the “life” for thirty-eight years.
So far what I find is this: It is just plain not good for you to be so aware of your humanness and the why of your existence.
Be in denial if you have to about whatever it is.
Sincerely like things you like.
Surround yourself with a sense of tranquility and beauty whether that comes in a form of a walk in the tree filled park, a day of shopping, or taking a second to acknowledge that you are moved by the tiny sliver of color: spring green, a visual property of a nameless weed peaking through a crack in the concrete sidewalk.

I began a series of work, entitled where happiness lives, in 2001.
I decided to actively pursue the idea of happiness.
I am interested in constructing environments a viewer can experience emotionally and physically.
Something that is vaguely familiar but a little different in a fantastical way.
I am suggesting what an embodiment of happiness may look like if it had form.

The process begins in wander.
I wander a lot.
I wander the streets taking pictures of objects and situations that engage my senses, some times picking up discarded colorful objects.
I wander among the pages of magazines and books, tearing out samples of color, articles or writing down thoughts.
I wander among the yards of fabrics in fabric stores.
These are the kinds of references I bring to my studio.
In the studio, I make simple drawings and brief writings about the collected references, either each piece on its own or in an intentional combination.
From there, I take a specific idea and visual to create site-specific installations and paintings of singular curiosity.
