The primary focus of my work is to create or suggest some place or environment. I am interested in developing the space within a print. I want something that is in its own separate world. It is the visual equivalent of ambient music that seeks to define a place, real orimaginary, through sound. I generate my ideas from stream of consciousness drawing. This issimply letting the drawing process happen. I generally work with the themes of the road, transportation, buildings and empty space, picking what feels right at the time. Then I edit the best parts together for my prints.

My drawings could not exist without the etching process. I take full advantage of the variety of marks that can be generated. This includes accidental marks as well, such as allowing the ground to break down and scraping out areas to add texture. As a result, the prints have a layer of surface noise, marks that could not come directly from my hand. I want prints that have a build up of marks from light to dark so that they have an atmosphere - like grainy film or video. I consider my art to be the printmaking version of cinema verite, a film making style that is free from narration, script, commentary or judgment. It is simply footage of the event as it happens with the naturally occurring sound. The images are presented as they occur for the viewer to absorb. Growing up with cable television and the proliferation of home video, it is only natural for me to look at art in terms of television and film. Each print is its own entity, independent from any of the other prints, but constructed from the same vocabulary. I prefer the smaller scale for a number of reasons. I find that I can develop the drawing better when working small, particularly since I use a variety of fine lines and marks. Also the prints are more intimate and private. It is a glimpse into a world that might exist someplace else. My sense of humor functions best on a smaller level. It is subtle and does not need to be overstated.
