In the past I have talked about the importance of drawing. I still see drawing as very important to the process of making art, quite possibly the most important aspect of making art. Lately, when I think about drawing the Old Masters come to mind, in general the early Renaissance Italians who are sometimes referred to as ‘the Primitives’ and Titian in particular. Titian¹s use of color and contrast interests me, especially in the way he could make a painting glow by highlighting bright colors against a dark background or the Italian Primitive¹s grayed out tones throughout paintings with a strong, bright accent.

In my new work I’m trying to do something similar in both the physical construction of the work and how I paint it. The sculptures are low, no more than 2 feet high, and spread out. While the work and effort that goes into making the sculpture is tremendous, I see it as casual and less dependent on the engineering aspect of making welded steel sculpture and the clichés that accompany drawing in space.
