'Murder in the Cathedral' 275x200cm 2005
Ellis' work is a continuous investigation into the manipulation of mostly non-traditional materials combined with the use of text. Working broadly within the context of painting Ellis uses various industrial and found materials such as house paint, spray paint, bitumen, posters and found wood with canvas, board or aluminium. He is keen to consistently experiment with diverse materials and their reactions in order to convey a direct physicality between artist and audience. The manipulation of these materials is generally instinctive and expressive, using various techniques such as painting, pouring, dripping and scoring. In doing so the artist embraces the base, discarded and otherwise unwanted and lends them a new significance.

Ellis' use of text is influenced by the everyday experience of seeing graffiti, shop signs, road markings and builder’s notations in cities globally. Employing techniques from broad brushwork to frenzied scoring and instinctive spray painting to highly controlled sign-writing, Ellis uses text as a direct expressive vehicle. By appropriating misspellings and incorrect syntax from street graffiti and personally significant lines from poetry; or repeatedly using individual words that have particular resonance for the artist, Ellis seeks to subvert language’s common usage, creating instead ambiguities and new possibilities. Combined these strategies serve to recall the worn and decrepit surfaces of the urban environment whilst engaging the audience physically and cognitively. Each surface contains its own private history and signifies the flux of both instantaneous and prolonged experience, representing constant actions upon the environment. Ellis' creation of subjective material fields recall this whilst corresponding to his own actions. Acting as mediator, Ellis intends for the work to create new and uncertain relationships between artist, material, language and audience.
