The painting process begins with the laying down of a coloured ground to create a background space of indeterminate depth. A structure or pattern follows, for example a regular grid of circles, which then breaks down as elements are erased, layered, manipulated and repeated. The image draws attention to its own flatness through the use of edge to edge pattern but also to its potential for illusion as modelled forms hover in space and cast shadows that appear to locate them on a particular plane. The forms themselves are abstract or geometric but through their relationships to each other and the space they inhabit they allude to a potential narrative or an imaginary landscape.
