‘Take away my make up and underneath is merely not Buffo. An absence. A vacancy’. Nights at the Circus, Angela Carter
Over the last couple of years Flora Bradwell has been creating a series of characters to populate an imaginary circus. These brilliantly coloured and patterned performers distort themselves for their audience, showing off their luxurious paint and vibrant palette. The heightened colour and textured surface mirror the spectacle of display and theatricality associated with performance and the circus. In contrast the more 'realistic' eyes beneath these layers of paint conjure up ideas of facade and maintain a link between the imagined world of the paintings and the world inhabited by the viewer. The process of building up the character through a series of different layers of paint emphasizes the feeling of them being costumed and masked.
