Janneke Van Leeuwen

Page 1

Janneke Van Leeuwen pictures the human mind by creating photographic scale models of psychological states. Her photography has a great similarity to the human mind; both are generated by a physical body, which processes sensory information according to scientific laws. Yet the essence of a photograph is as elusive as the essence of consciousness. Van Leeuwen’s photographic Mind Models reflect on these ambiguous aspects. Grounded in the physical world, but lacking an everyday context, her abstract models of internal worlds can only be understood intuitively and allow for many possible interpretations. In response to the increasingly blurring boundaries between virtual and physical worlds, Van Leeuwen has recently also started developing scale models for in situ installations of her photographic works. By documenting these installation models, they become photographic works in their own right as well, embodying both a proposition for a physical presentation as well as a mental representation.

JANNEKE VAN LEEUWEN (b. 1980, Groningen, The Netherlands) obtained a Masters degree in Neuropsychology before studying Fine Art Photography at the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2009 her work was published by the international Art&Design Wallpaper* Magazine for their Online Graduate Directory (2010). Van Leeuwen was also part of the prestigious Musée de l’Elysée’s traveling group exhibition reGeneration2: Tomorrow’s Photographers Today. Since its launch in 2010 at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, the reGeneration2 exhibition has been touring the world and has been on display at: Pingyao International Photography Festival, Pingyao, China; Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town, South Africa; Galleria Carla Sozzani, Milan, Italy; Fotoweek, Washington, USA; Flash Forward Festival, Toronto, Canada; Couvent Saint-Césaire, Rencontres d'Arles; Arles, France; Centre Gallery, Miami Dade College, Miami, USA; Aperture Foundation, New York, USA; ROSPHOTO, Saint Petersburg, Russia. The exhibition was accompanied by the catalogue ‘reGeneration2: Tomorrow’s Photographers Today ‘, published by Thames&Hudson and by the Aperture Foundation in New York (USA). Since then Van Leeuwen’s work has been exhibited and published internationally, including the Netherlands, Turkey, Italy, Spain and the UK.  In February 2013 Van Leeuwen had her first solo exhibition in London at Gallery 8 followed by her inclusion as part of the Au (Gold) exhibition at Beers Contemporary. Van Leeuwen is currently collaborating with 2 neuroscientists on a book publication about 'Machine Medical Ethics', published by Springer Science Publisher New York in 2014. Van Leeuwen also received the Beers Contemporary Award for Emerging Art 2013 for Photography/2D.
