Chair-Table-Wall Composition (studio view)

A studios portrait of Tanja Rector

I grew up in a middle-class Dutch family with a mother who sew our clothes and knitted our sweaters. Adapting old craft traditions, changing the materials and stripping its practical use, I started working on “Chair-Table-Wall composition” celebrating and in search for the silence of being in the act of “woman’s work” or “slow work”. By slowing things down I feel a regained control over life. There is something very rewarding at doing something that has demanded a long production time.

This project started with the meaning less act of cutting flowers out of a 50 feet long roll of paper. By leaving the paper blank I hope to let the inexpressibility and silence be visual.

The flowers are left accidentally in the places were they fall showing the subtle movement in the repetitive act of cutting the pattern. The remaining cut outs are sown together, placed on the table and draped to the wall. By sorting, arranging and placing the blank pieces of paper I explore the continuous cycle of the seasons, cleansing and ritual.

“Chair-Table-Wall composition” is a free-floating work without meaning were the viewer can hopefully for a brief moment experience the quietness of being.

On the North wall is a series of five framed ink drawings mounted. The portraits of sections of trees are directly drawn on natural walnut, oak, cedar, maple and birch wood paper.

“Meditation tools” are energy vessels build by hand directly from slow drying cement than carved and sanded keeping the impressions of my fingers. The original pieces are than cast in ceramic, and glazed in ivory or blue. The final objects are placed in shallow bowls and placed on pedestals in the center of the studio.

“Bamboo” is a Wall Composition of about a 100 hand build clay pieces, fired and glazed in ivory glaze and mounted to the northwest wall of the studio.
