"Balanced", oil on cut-out canvas, 2006
I want my art to express how the contemporary state and historical influence of politics, religion, and the ebb and flow of cultural shifts coalesce into what I like to call the transmogrification of identity. My subject matter, though at first glance broad is varied accordingly to reflect the diverse conditions of our times. Never before has humanity been exposed to so much information as we cross into an uncharted territory: the digital frontier. The unifying element of the various narratives communicates the sensation of being overly stimulated and how it isolates us. Since this is a global problem regardless of cultural affiliation, we are all affected so it gives me the freedom to approach the subject from many different angles. These evolutions in my work were difficult and unfortunately limited by categorizations of the art world. When I went beyond painting, sculpture and installation as separate ventures, I was able to create work more holistically. This idea of unifying techniques also lead to breakthroughs in my subject matter in how world politics, religion and culture are all effected by our evolution into the digital age which in time will become a mythology all its own to be reinterpreted in the future.
"Seeing the Unseen", oil on cut-out canvas, 2006
By thinking what I considered to be "outside the box" I have challanged my own views of what a painting, sculpture and installation are. For example, I love the illusionistic capacity of paint and to me, it has the strongest presence of any 2D medium. Seeing my figures on a white wall or integrated with real objects brings them into my space, into my physical world which helps me feel even more connected to them. It also inspires me to continue challanging myself to see things in new ways.
