DIDIER MENCOBONI, EPISODE XI

OPENING : SATURDAY, JANUARY 7TH, 2017

We are pleased to invite you to the opening of Didier Mencoboni's solo show, Episode XI, at the Eric Dupont gallery on Saturday, January 7th, from 3 pm.

Exhibition from January 7th to January 18th.

This new episode at the Eric Dupont gallery, the eleventh, extends exhibitions in Ivry-sur-Seine in 2012 and 2015, and in Bastogne in 2014: three exhibitions where a colour shined and, like a plateau, carried various graphic and coloured elements.

It is a matter of standing on the edge of a vast area and being able to live an experiment generated by the colour. Laid on the ground, dozens of sheets of a red fluorescent poppy colour are spread out, invading the gallery, radiating and diffusing in the air their coloured power, tinting by reflection the faces and the walls. Almost alone, not quite. Here and there some elements complement the device. Mirrors, coloured spheres are lying on the orange pigments of the drawings: a whole world punctuates and shapes the surface, digging here, raising there, amplifying the movement of the colour.

Some half-painted pebbles are placed on the ground, alongside the coloured installation. Leaving the surface for a volume, the colour irradiates such as an incandescent hearth and makes the mass of granite lose its gravity. The appearance of these pebbles results from a long path. The first one painted one emerged in the 80s: collected on a beach of the Bigouden countryside, covered in a gradient of blue paint, it associated the weight of the granite and the lightness of the colour. This pebble was long in finding its place inthe work, but th e collection has been continued with parsimony during the walks on the same beach and the choice has been done with an increasing accuracy. If some pebbles are present in the exhibition, they were brought by the colour: a question of density, a way of fin ding a balance in the movement of this colour, which digs and raises the ground. After the sea hadmade its work, after having been rolled days and days and washed up on the borders of the ocean, the pebbles are placed at the edge of another wide coloured space.

Floating over the surface, some coloured silks are installed on other spheres: silhouettes of cloth, in-between inhabitants that are put in movement buy a single breath. Tinted silks, shades of reds and oranges, migrate out of the plan. They are the same ones as those presented at the ƒric Dupont gallery in 2003, where they stretched along a steel rope from one wall to another of the gallery, drawing crosses where the coloured plans came to partition space.

Two large drawings complement the device, two surfaces slowly elaborated with a pencil point, coloured punctuations of ink: an other way of standing at the edge of a wide space, at the edge of a world.
