VAN HORN ZEIGT EVA BERENDES
THE NEAR SERENDIPITOUS ENCOUNTER

THE NEAR SERENDIPITOUS ENCOUNTER

June 7 to July 20, 2013
Opening Friday June 7, 7 - 9 pm

We're looking forward to the first solo-exhibition by Eva Berendes at VAN HORN.

Large-format grid surfaces assembled with common items such as everyday objects, raw materials and flowing fabrics - they are all found objects which lose their actual function within their new array and enter into relationships with each other.

What seems spontaneously arranged at first, involves comprehensive considerations: it is apparent that the artist follows specific principals in terms of selection and assembly when she consequently shifts between transparency and opacity, between static and smoothly falling materials. Accordingly, the choice of materials becomes an extension of the compositional process and the configuration of the objects constitutes a balancing act, in which every newly added item influences the impression of the whole framework.

The selected elements and the geometrical shapes eventually refer concretely to painterly traditions and to the imagery of non-representational art. Within their two-dimensionality, the hand welded grids provide virtually infinite possibilities for the artistic arrangements; and due to their neutrality, they become an arena, in which the image can take place. Berendes' Grids are situated along the boundary between two- and three-dimensional objects - they take up real space, but simultaneoulsy, they always remain an image.

Parallel opening in Flingern are the galleries

i8 Gallery, Reykjavik presents OLAFUR ELIASSON - Tiltru

6 June - 17 August 2013

Icelandic nature is prominent in Eliasson's work, and his artistic relationship with it often involves collection or documentation that is scientific in tone. The country becomes a sensory laboratory where ideas can be developed and evolved into art, as evidenced in the multiple photographic series that would seem to witness a near compulsive need for collecting.

TAKA ISHII GALLERY, Tokyo presents NOBUYOSHI ARAKI - EroReal

7 June - 27 July 2013

Magazine pin-ups aren't interesting, are they? Especially now that they're shot digitally, they lack eroticism. They're doing it wrong. That's why I had to come in. It's not about an ambiance or concept; it's about being real. Not realism, but real?ero-real. I have to say it straight. It's not about nudity; clothed subjects can be erotic.

The approach, London presents JACK LAVENDER - Dreams Chunky

6 June - 28 July 2013

Jack Lavender draws from a world of mass-produced objects, transforming their singular banality through their composition within such structures as grids and metal armatures. Sitting between the disciplines of painting, sculpture and collage, Lavender brings different elements together to create a new entity.
