Willie Cole will open a site-specific installation, FROM WATER TO LIGHT at a former Newark fire station on Thursday, April 4th. A reception for the artist and open house will be held on Saturday, April 13th, from 3 to 8 pm. Using more than 10,000 empty plastic water bottles, the artist has created the walls for two distinct ‘rooms’, each measuring 15 x 15 feet with a 7 foot tall chandelier suspended in each room. Willie Cole's sculpture has long been known for its use of discarded materials and everyday domestic objects to reference historical events and people. The image of the Buddha appears in the plastic water bottles reflecting the artist’s continued interest in transformation and transcendence.

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd, visitors will be encouraged to donate their empty plastic water bottles which will be used by the artist to create a circular, mandala-like work on the rear wall of the fire house over the period of the exhibition.

Willie Cole was born in Somerville, NJ and studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. He continues to live in New Jersey. His work is currently the subject of a traveling retrospective, Complex Conversations: Willie Cole Sculptures and Wall Works, organized by The Richmond Center for Visual Arts at Western Michigan University and curated by Patterson Sims. An illustrated catalogue is available from Alexander and Bonin, New York.

The artist is represented by Alexander and Bonin, New York. For further information, please contact Rebecca Brickman at 212.367.7474, or rb@alexanderandbonin.com

This installation has been organized with the help of the Sumei Multidisciplinary Arts Center. The fire house space is donated for the period of the exhibition by the City of Newark.
