Galerie Bob Gysin take great pleasure in presenting Ray Hegelbach‘s first solo exhibition in Zürich.

Ray Hegelbach, who lives and works in Zürich, is a painterly painter in that he not only investigates his medium by its own means but also explores the context or framework in which most paintings are created and exhibited, engaging in complex analysis on the canvas. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, a considerable feature of the show is its installation-based presentation.

What can painting achieve? And what can a painting achieve? Such questions have prompted Ray Hegelbach to explore the nature of spatiality, and how an illusion of space in two-dimensional representation can be both created and destroyed. Hegelbach‘s approach is to use reduced shapes and subjects in the ‚non-colours‘ of black and white that immediately evoke spatial structures. Superimposed strata of paint and occasional, intense light-dark contrasts produce a strong sense of depth, while complex overlays and inter-leavings impede a clear perception of a great number of structural levels transported to a single surface.

Any suggestion of kinship with the classical art genre of trompe l’œil, however, is kept at bay by imprecisions and a dominant materiality that prevent its full manifestation. In fact, Hegelbach is interested in the very opposite to visual trickery; his aim is to deconstruct the illusion and to ‚expose‘ painting for what it is. On the other hand, inspired by Giorgio De Chirico, for example, he is also interested in surreal spatial compositions.

Ray Hegelbach deconstructs the process of creating an image or a picture; he explores how a picture functions and how this functioning can be created and undone in the same instant and using the same means. Ambiguity plays a key part in Hegelbach‘s quest; it is the actual objective of his work. Many of his pieces afford glimpses of a world behind the scenes, revealing empty canvases and the reverse side of pictures, individual parts and how structures are put together. The result is an ambiguous work that oscillates between interior and exterior, between front and reverse, between objects and their representation.

Wir freuen uns, in den Räumen der Galerie Bob Gysin die erste Zürcher Einzelausstellung von Ray Hegelbach zu präsentieren.  August 30 - October 18 2014

Galerie Bob Gysin take great pleasure in presenting Ray Hegelbach's first solo exhibition in Zürich.

Ray Hegelbach malt.
