Adam Buick: “Rare Earth”

15 January – 27 February 2016
Opening: Friday, 15 January 2016, 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Tommaso Corvi-Mora is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by British artist Adam Buick, his first at the gallery.

Adam Buick studied archeology and anthropology at university, subsequently training as a potter. He lives in St Davids, in Pembrokeshire. For the last ten years his work has drawn its main inspiration from Moon Jars, a type of large, globular porcelain vesselp roduced in Korea in the 17th and 18th Century.

Adam Buick uses locally sourced clays and often inserts stone and sand from the fields and beaches nearby into the surface of the pot. His glazes and slips also come from local clays and other natural materials like seaweed and wood ash. He is most interested in rooting his work into the landscape and environment of South West Wales, using different materials as a way to evoke the experience of a place.

This exhibition will include some newceramics and agroup of works, produced in 2007 and 2009, where instead of local materials he hasfired a mobile phone, anmp3player and a circuit board into his pots. These objects that we use everyday rely on what are called “rare earth ” materials forfunctioning; Adam Buick wasinterested in exploring the environmental and political implications inthe use of these materials, wanting to highlight the consequences ofour dependence on these gadgets on the environment and on the lives of those whoare involved in their production.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.
