13:00 - 17:00 hrs. To start 2017 Gerhard Hofland is proud to present the exhibition Images du Futur by Koen Delaere and Jens Wolf. Both Delaere and Wolf are invested in fundamental painting and their work is directly derived from questioning the essence of their medium.
For Koen Delaere, the paint has to do the work. He creates by engaging in a form of performative expression that echoes the spontaneous energy of live music concerts and is not shy of unorthodox methods and experiments to achieve this. Simultaneously, Delaere creates paintings that are clearly directed and from which all coincidence has disappeared. They are autonomous objects: explosions of a deep poetic intensity that finds its way to the viewer through the material and the artists ability to modify it.
The plywood “pattern boards” of Jens Wolf are of a very different nature. Working from a historical index of geometric and constructivist shapes, Wolf repeats his iconic forms as if they are templates by painting the same shapes in different sizes. By adding seemingly random elements, such as unfinished edges and apparent mistakes, Wolf shows both painterly aspects and the ultimate control he has over his work. This way, the artist uses notions of reproduction and repetition to challenge the so often perceived uniqueness of painting.
Through their strong differences in approach Delaere and Wolf appear as each other’s antithesis. Wolf is questioning the concept of the painted image by making traces of construction and creation visible parts of his work. Delaere continuously reinvents the expressive power of painting through the material itself. It is clear, however, that both artists investigate the boundaries of painting with similar effect: strong chromatic intensity.
Koen Delaere (1970, BE) lives and works in Tilburg, where he studied fine arts at the Akademie voor Beeldende Vorming. Recently, Delaere’s work was shown in Los Angeles (following a residency at the La Brea Studios), New York and Brussels, among other exhibitions taking place both in the Netherlands and outside.
Jens Wolf (1967, DE) lives and works in Berlin. Wolf studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under the mastership of Helmut Dorner and Luc Tuymans. Early 2016 the Städtische Galerie Waldkreiburg hosted an overview of all his renowned pattern boards made thus far. Later this year, his work will be exhibited alongside Gavin Turk at Marta Herford in the exhibition Risse in der Wirklichkeit.
