Nature Morte Berlin freut sich mit „The Botanica“ eine Ausstellung von AA Bronson und Michael Bühler-Rose anzukündigen, die am Gallery Weekend 2013 eröffnet wird.
Mit Bezug auf die Tradition der hispanischen „Botanicas” – religiöser und magischer Bedarfsläden – in Amerika, zeigen die beiden Künstler eine Reihe von Arbeiten, die mit der Idee des Künstlers als Schamane/Priester, des Kunstobjekts als verehrter Gottheit oder der künstlerischen Schöpfung als Prozess der mystisch-rituellen Weihe spielen. Die Künstler beschwören Geister, beziehen sich auf reale, als auch auf erfundene Religionen und spielen mit den Konventionen von Ritualen, Ritualobjekten, Magiezubehör und spirituellem Konsumverhalten. Dabei lassen sie sich auch auf den manchmal schwierigen Dialog zwischen Spiritualität und künstlerischer Praxis ein.
Die Arbeit von AA Bronson – als Künstler, Heiler, Kurator und Lehrer – ist geprägt von Kollaboration und Konsens. 1946 in Vancouver geboren, gründete er 1969 mit Felix Partz und Jorge Zontal die Künstlergruppe General Idea. Die Gruppe lebte und arbeitete die folgenden 25 Jahre zusammen und organisierte über 100 Einzelausstellungen, zahlreiche Gruppenausstellungen und öffentliche Kunstprojekte. Sie waren bekannt für ihr Engagement in der Punkbewegung, der Queer Theory, dem AIDS-Aktivismus und anderen Ausdrucksformen des gesellschaftlich Anderen. Seit dem Tod seiner Partner im Jahre 1994 ist AA Bronson als Solokünstler tätig und arbeitet häufig mit jüngeren Generationen zusammen, zuletzt in seiner Performance-Reihe „Invocation of the Queer Spirits“. Von 2004 bis 2010 war er Direktor von Printed Matter Inc. in New York und gründete 2005 die alljährliche NY Art Book Fair. 2009 rief er das Institut für Kunst, Religion und soziale Gerechtigkeit am Union Theological Seminary in New York ins Leben, das er bis heute leitet. 2013 gründete er die Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair. Er hatte Lehraufträge an der UCLA, der Universität von Toronto und der Yale School of Art. AA Bronson und General Idea werden von der Galerie Esther Schipper repräsentiert.
Michael Bühler-Rose ist seit seinem vierzehnten Lebensjahr ein Schüler des Vaishnavismus – die Richtung des Hinduismus, die sich mit dem Gott Vishnu befasst. Er studierte über Jahre während längerer Aufenthalte in Indien, unter anderem als Fulbright Stipendiat, Sanskrit, “Kalpa” (Ritual) und Philosophie. Er ist sowohl Kunstkritiker im Fachbereich für Fotografie der Rhode Island School of Design als auch “Purohita” (ein Hindu-Priester) und die Arbeit in beiden Bereichen beeinflusst seine künstlerische Tätigkeit. Seine Fotografien, Videos und Installationen basieren auf den Theorien der „Relational Aesthetics” und vereinen die Dialektik konzeptueller Kunst mit vaishnavistischen Ritualen und Bilderkulten. Seine Arbeiten wurden jüngst im Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, dem Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Delhi, den Galerien Bose Pacia, New York, Chatterjee and Lal, Mumbai, Carroll and Sons, Boston ausgestellt, sowie von der Photographischen Sammlung der SK Stiftung Kultur auf der Art Cologne gezeigt. Seine Arbeiten sind in der Sammlung Goetz, München, in der Photographischen Sammlung, Köln und dem Harvard Fogg Museum, Cambridge vertreten. Er wird zudem im Herbst 2013 an der Ausstellung „The Temptations of AA Bronson“ im Witte de With, Rotterdam, beteiligt sein. Michael Bühler-Rose wurde 1980 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, geboren und lebt hauptsächlich in New York.

Nature Morte Berlin is pleased to present “The Botanica“, a two-person exhibition by AA Bronson and Michael Bühler-Rose opening during Gallery Weekend 2013.
Referring to the tradition of Hispanic “botanicas”—religious and magical supply shops—in the Americas, the two artists will exhibit a variety of works that play with the artist as a shaman/priest, the art object as a venerated deity, and the creation of the artwork as mystic ritual consecration. Invoking spirits and evoking both real and imaginary religions, the artists play with the conventions of rituals, ritual objects, magical supplies, and spiritual consumerism, while engaging in the sometimes difficult conversation between spirituality and artistic practice.
AA Bronson’s work—as an artist, healer, curator, and educator—is marked by the practice of collaboration and consensus. Born 1946 in Vancouver, he formed the artists’ group “General Idea” with Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal in 1969. The group lived and worked together for the next 25 years, undertaking over 100 solo exhibitions, numerous group shows and public art projects. They were known for their early involvement in punk, queer theory, AIDS activism, and other manifestations of the other. Since his partners died in 1994, AA Bronson has worked and exhibited as a solo artist, often collaborating with younger generations, most recently in his performance series “Invocation of the Queer Spirits”. From 2004 to 2010 he was the Director of “Printed Matter, Inc.” in New York City, founding the annual NY Art Book Fair in 2005. In 2009 he founded the Institute for Art, Religion, and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, which he now co-directs. In 2013 he was the founding Director of Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair. He has taught at UCLA, the University of Toronto, and the Yale School of Art. AA Bronson and General Idea are represented by gallery Esther Schipper.
Since the age of 14, Michael Bühler-Rose’s study and practice of Vaishnavism (the branch of Hinduism dedicated to the God Vishnu), Sanskrit, kalpa (ritual), and philosophy have prompted extended stays in India, including one as a Fulbright Fellow. He is both Critic in the Department of Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and purohita (Hindu priest) and his work on these platforms influence his artistic production. In his photographs, videos, and installations his work expands upon recent theories of Relational Aesthetics and fold the dialectics of Conceptual Art with Vaishnavite ritual and image worship. His work has been shown recently at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Delhi; Bose Pacia, New York; Chatterjee and Lal, Mumbai; Carroll and Sons, Boston and with SK Stiftung Kultur/Die Photographische Sammlung at Art Cologne. His work is held in the Sammlung Goetz, Munich; in the Photographische Sammlung, Cologne; and in the Harvard Fogg Museum, Cambridge. He will be part of the exhibition “The Temptations of AA Bronson” at Witte de With, Rotterdam in the fall of 2013. Michael Bühler-Rose was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1980 and is based in New York.
