Playing with paint to create claustrophobic scenes, she also generates a tension between the gestural handling and her sleek subject - the ultimate consumer object - the car. Her painterly technique constructs work which is dark and foreboding, frequently heading towards abstraction.
Wilmots paintings are generally flat with passages of glossy, built-up areas and with visceral areas of crusty paint
Although employing a high-impact, painterly approach, this series is understated with a cinematic air. Theres a sense of a stalled narrative at work in Wilmots paintings, asking, What next?.......

There's a seductive nature to luxury cars; a dangerous edge to these powerful machines. While Jo Wilmots paintings celebrate this material desire they also seem slightly detached, even cynical.
Wilmot is a painter who revels in the medium.
