The Mark of Abel
We wear stories on our faces.
I am interested in how we see ourselves and what we feel.
My subjects are people I know, family, friends, acquaintances. My photographs include mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, brothers, sisters, couples, friends. When I meet with them, their relationships are already formed. I look for depth and contradiction in the faces. I watch their gestures; the curve of a spine, a clenched fist, an awkward hand, a startled glance. It is a combination of strength and vulnerability that makes me respond. They are complex emotions that guide us. Sometimes what we try to conceal is the most revealing. Through the details, I want to describe who we are.
I try to understand what I see in front of me. Relationships are complicated. Our first affect all others.
We are at our best when we are learning who we are. My intention with this project is to show us ourselves.
