Mio Shirai's work tends to explore relationships among the human being, natural aspects of her environment and artificial aspects of her environment as well as the dynamic boundaries and interchangeable processes of nature's figure and everyday icons of civilization associated therewith. Her approach encompasses as well a systematic methodology of viewing universal dynamics: rotating and inverting the relationships among the private or inner world and the public self and otherness -- objects and intsallations can exist as interfaces for transcendence between and among these various aspects of worldliness.

Shirai was born in Kyoto, Japan and received her BA and MFA from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. She lives and works in New York. Shirai has mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions in Asia, Europe and the United States including Kunstlerhaus in Graz, Austria; Shedhalle in Zurich; The Municipal Museum in Prague; Exit Art in New York; East-West Cultural Studies in New York; Temporary Kunsthalle in Munich; Hillside Gallery in Tokyo;

Soko Tokyo Gallery in Tokyo; Tochigi Prefectural Museum in Japan; Itabashi Museum of Art in Tokyo; and Shoto Museum of Art in Tokyo. She also participated in The 7th Triennale India, 6. Triennale der Kleinplastick in Stuttgart, Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale 2000 and Fukui International Video Biennale in Japan. Shirai has received the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship Grant in New York, Freeman Foundation Fellowship in Vermont, Pola Art Foundation Grant in Japan. Her work has been featured on the cover of Art and Asia Pacific.
