Dog Map Series, 2001

The Dog Map Series, 2000/01 is a group of sand-cast dogs that encompasses a large group of standardized breeds. These include common breeds and those less known, to make up a series that scrutinizes the idea of breeding to a strictly regimented standard. Hot glass is ladled into a negative sand form to create a positive silhouette the particular breed. The over pour of hot glass is left intact rather than being trimmed off. Casts with imperfections such as air bubbles and small cracks are kept even though they are imperfect. These imperfections contrast the rigid standards conventionally associated with the fine craft of sand-casting glass. In addition, these imperfect elements within the cast dog silhouettes works in contrast to the controlled conditions and standardized regulations that are usually required of purebred dog breeders.
