The pieces that make up my most recent series, collectively titled the Stone Series, are hybrids in the sense that they combine printmaking techniques with drawing and painting (and occasionally sculpture). Using Mylar templates, I build up layers of patterns and configurations to form dense fields of shapes that suggest both mechanical and organic referents. Conceptually, the work is very much influenced by digital culture and the various questions about how our immersion in technology is affecting our attitudes toward--and experiences of--nature (including our selves). By merging apparent antitheses such as mechanical and organic, digital and analog, and randomness and order, I hope to draw the viewer into a contemplative inner space where the presence of conceptual ambiguity leads to a richness of meaning not accessible to ordinary awareness. |
