My recent work is generated from the writings of medieval women mystics. Their diaries and poems tell of extreme fasting, self-induced stigmatas, apocalyptic dreams, and erotic visions, offering a limitless trove of imagery and a framework for conceptual and intuitive processes. These long-buried stories closely parallel the work of contemporary performance artists like Carolee Schneemann, Hannah Wilke, and Marina Abramovich, feminist pioneers who rankled various authorities but garner under-the-radar idolization and hero-worship, not unlike many medieval saints.
I am currently working with ideas of trance states, cult of personality, and mystical connection to the creative process, which I have found in the work of other idols of mine, (proto)punk rock artists Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull, Kim Gordon, and Joan Jett, to name only a few.
An important component of my work is formal exploration through the use of a variety of overlapping processes and materials, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and installation.
