My work is based in emotion and inquiry into the exposed underbelly of human-ness. “No Relation” uses the photographic image to create a narrative with distinct reference to the power dynamics in love and relationships.With each work I manipulate and combine appropriated images with my own photographs, scans, found materials and paint. The resin coating creates a tough, impenetrable surface which seduces with a hidden agenda but acts as a barrier to human touch. It unifies complications of surface textures and protects what is vulnerable.
The images and accompanying text are based on private conversations; statements made by various husbands or lovers. In response the female voice speaks in ,“She said: What initially drew us together is ultimately what broke us apart”. The idea behind this statement goes deeper than mere fantasy or projection of early romantic love. It is a deep love for the forbidden in oneself. It is a falling in love with the other because it is impossible to acknowledge a part of yourself. It is the dilemma of the missing piece, that when found in another becomes outgrown over time.
