Bibliography
An open state

Working from photographs, found images and memory as a starting point.
Unrest and uncertainty and a desire to question, change, destruct and reconstruct what I am looking at, inspire my practice.
Thinking about looking; the act of looking. The inability to see something all at once, the desire to capture something just out of your grasp, suggestive of a part of a whole.
Its about time and memory, and the sense of loss implicit in trying to remember something and get it down.
The act of painting is the act of processing.
And then the act of trying to forget where you began and releasing yourself benieth the surface of appearances into the flow, reaching for that colour, the gesture, tone and line, you paint and repaint, look and look again, sometimes rotating the canvas to obscure it, to lose it.

Then the painting starts making itself.

A balance between its past and present; merging and separating with what it was and what it is.

Finding this is what excites me about painting. Finding something beyond politics beyond opinion, beyond separation and judgement a place where all is, and all is well. Matter just forming and transforming. This pure state is the ecstasy of the artist.

Emson follows the work of her peers such as phoebe unwin, sonia almeida, nick goss, Katie Patterson as well as that of Matisse, Delacroix, doig and others.
