Education PLEASE SEE: http://ulaeinstein.com/CV BIO: Ula Einstein is a Swiss born multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. Her expanded practice - employing gesture, line and process explores the intrinsic link between deconstruction and construction, Her work includes installations, drawing, works on paper, sculpture, and work that straddles the space between painting and sculpture. Ms. Einstein's process oriented work includes re-employing and stretching the boundaries of materials and tools in her everyday surroundings, along with scavenged items and discarded objects, Her work is included among collections internationally. STATEMENT Exploring materials and methods with a very hands-on and lo-fi approach, I embrace an economy of means to create an expansive whole. From micro to macro, there is fluctuating from particle to whole and back again. I employ materials and tools using their innate characteristics, but also in ways which detour and extend from their original purpose. My ongoing installations are often rooted in the exploration of physicality and immateriality. They consist of fragments made in the studio, created site-specific for exhibition Through my meditation and deliberation on chance, control and uncertainty, my work is also further stretched by paradox: empty/full, conceal/reveal, shadow/light, pain/beauty, rupture/repair, fracture/whole, static/movement. Playing With Fire how I spent my summer I have a deep respect for the element of fire whose qualities include energy and intensity, warmth and destruction. But as I burn away, I am also burning in. There are no sketches. Fire obliterates and perforates and creation is immediate. The use of positive and negative space is important throughout as I explore and straddle the space between 2D and 3D. The imagery produced through the forms is abstracted from a wide array of sources as diverse as molecular structure, cells, book pages, lace, text, hieroglyphics, webs, fossils, impressions, architecture, synthetic design, and cave paintings. This ritualistic work is a partial response to our culture of speed, multi-fragments, visual stimuli, and endless distractions - where I have a hard time focusing while holding the infinite complexity. These drawings are my way of contemplating and paring down accumulations. While things are changing every second, I remember our interconnectivity and am prompted to response with an array of gestures, intimate and large, controlled and elastic, reflecting on our vastness. |
