Since moving from Shikoku Island, Japan to Seattle in 1995, Yuk Nakamura has been creating sculptural installations with ceramic as her primary medium that emphasize the relationship between concept, form and space. Nakamura creates her work by pushing the envelope of ceramic medium and turning limitations upside down into new possibilities, as media for her own voice. Her work challenges the aesthetic restraint of her traditional cultural roots through active experimentation with new media and contemporary issues: cross-cultural, multi-faceted contemporary sculptural forms that reflect and challenge our specific time, place, culture, and social environment.
Nakamuras recent projects include a solo show at Peeler Art Center at DePauw University (Greencastle, IN) in winter 2007 and a multi-media installation and collaboration developed during a residency New Works Laboratory - a joint project by 911 Media Arts Center and the Henry Art Gallery. The work has been selected for a solo show at the Henry Art Gallery.
Nakamura has been nominated for the 2007 Neddy Artist Fellowship by Behnke Foundation. She is the recipient of the Joshibi Intensive Award for Excellent Artwork and Research (Tokyo), the Artist Trust Fellowship (Seattle) and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship (New York). Other honors have included residencies at NAC (Italy), La Napoule Art Foundation (France) as well as Centrum (Port Townsend, WA). Her works are currently reviewed in Sculpture Magazine, Whitewall, and Vision (China).
Nakamura is a senior member at SOIL Artist-run Gallery, known as a catalyst for curatorial and artistic collaboration and experimentation, and represented by Howard House in Seattle.
