Artist Statement.
Recent works deal with violence, tragedy and the relationship between man and the environment. Tribal art, historical events, commercial iconography, technology and personal experiences have been of great influence on current work. I am inspired by the drama revealed in society and the interaction between humanity and the environment. The mystical qualities of traditional African art and ritual have also informed my work

My paintings and assemblages are done in mixed media such as acrylics, oils, latex, enamels, spray paint, photographs, stencils, found objects and other non-traditional materials. The works are layered with paint to create ambiguous pictorial space broken up by imagery often seemingly unrelated. Through the use of symbolism, signage, collage and found objects, I engage the viewer in a perceptual debate.

My performances often involve the inclusion of my physical body surrounded by symbolic objects. My past experience with theater has fostered my recent performances, which explore the subjectivity and the uncertainties of visual meaning; the synthesis of varied media; the complexities of collaboration and the significance of ritual as a poetic undertaking in contrast to banal daily activity.

My objective is to test cultural boundaries by visually questioning the operation of the cultural mind within social and political structures.
