Marianne Holm Hansen works across media including writing, drawing, photography, video and new technologies. With a focus on interpretation, her work interrogates, employs, exploits and re-appropriates, organizing systems, [art historical] tropes, established methodologies, behaviors and habits, to question how we come to experience things as we do and, to what extent, an awareness of this may open up the potential for new experiences to form. Essentially, her entire practice is an endeavor to both understand and challenge existing perceptions � to uncover and interrogate the structures through which we are taught to operate, think and respond, and, in turn, to practically test how they can be used and applied, differently, to generate alternative ways of thinking and doing.
At times working in relation to situations that defies easy categorization, her work includes attempts at giving form to that which exist outside language: the invisible, the sometimes purposefully hidden, the not easily communicable, the not necessarily � or not yet � known. In considering language as both malleable and fallible yet, the dominant system by which we seek to develop and share meaning, she is interested in how repetition, re-contextualization, or willful disregard for orthography and language conventions, may open up, rather than close down, the potential for meaning. In line with this, her current work is testing to what extent the hole � as gap and void � can be used as metaphor and catalyst for thinking through situations where language falters, or entirely fails. As with all her work, perhaps, it�s a quest for achieving clarity and order, for developing acute awareness, precise understanding and exact meaning, even when � or especially when � none exist.
