Max Neumann creates mysterious pictorial worlds that are dominated by gloomy individuals and groups.
Since individual features are missing, the works of Max Neumann are not narratives but instead, describe emotional conditions. They are not an image of a personality but an allegory of the human being as such.
Max Neumanns works are distinctive, both on the level of arrangement and reception. The works can not be completely analysed. As they follow the logic of dreams and the unconscious, they exude a disquieting effect that is associated with the indeterminableness of the presentation.The works hold a mirror up to the viewer, showing him his own dreams and fears, obsessions and fantasies.
The creative process is dominated by intuition and does not begin with conceptual or thematical considerations. Some quickly drawn lines or poured paint on the canvas provides the first formal arrangement. As the creative process progresses, the work evolves into figuration.
The formal aspect is of particular importance, the specific elements of the images are perfectly balanced.
Among the many awards he has been bestowed, Max Neumann was honoured with the Villa Romana Preis in 1986 and the Grand Prix de S.A.S. le Prince Rainier III de Monaco.
His works are part of numerous public and private collections from all over the world.
