The response to the emergence of these desired qualities during the process of making is visceral, as there often seems to come a point at which an arrangement suddenly feels right. The analysis of why this feels 'right' always comes later.
There seem to be some 'rules' for this process, although they are subject to re-negotiation on a daily basis. They derive from tacit internalisations of the experience of practice, though there are also times when pragmatic actions in the studio (such as moving and stacking materials in order to make space) are later recognised as 'hidden making' when the end result unexpectedly reveals itself as an artwork.
