My current body of work is rooted in a longstanding interest in our changing landscapes, urban industrial structures, and mineral formations. I cull imagery from photographs and catalogs of mineral collections, the Texas landscape and my personal mineral collection.

When examined closely, the crystal structures appear to be miniature worlds of their own; microscopic terrains or cities. I am inspired by the variations in form, color and complexity that make these naturally occurring formations feel as though they are engineered objects, seemingly foreign to the natural world from which they come. I graft together individual representations of minerals with symbolic abstract imagery to fabricate new landscapes in an artificial reality. Natural elements begin to feel man-made when enlarged and positioned as if buildings lining a road.
I use hand cut stencils as one way to transfer and repeat mineral forms. This technique combined with matte gouache painting and drawn abstracted imagery (arcs, rays, lines) allows me to convey a feeling of surreal, foreign sprawl. In other pieces I utilize layered and cut paper (ex. Acute, Towers, Peaks) by removing segments of the top drawing, revealing painted and colored paper behind. My use of cutouts, cut paper and layering is an integral part of my visual exploration of form, structure and space. |
