My recent work centres on industrial decline within my locality. Manual work carries little kudos. I question the wisdom of a society which no longer values the skill and knowledge to be gained by obsevation and example. These images were inspired by the Royal Naval Dockyard at Chatham. The Smithery, once the hub of the shipbuilding industry is now relegated to the status of a working museum. The anvils have been reinstated. Like tombs, they serve as reminders of the arduous achievement within these walls, the smithy's pride . The chains stand as metaphors for the men that made them. They at once gave both structure to their lives and bondage in the form of heavy arduous work.
