Artist Statement
I work with media and material combinations that include video and moving image projection, light, photography, text, drawing and print, and utlise devices such as mirroring, repetition, phasing and extended duration in my work. Such combinations are intended to offer an immersive experience whilst simultaneously ‘short-circuiting’ any actual immersion in the moment by engendering an ongoing awareness-of-self in relation to the material presence of the work, and the purposefully extended processes of perception and interpretation required by the work.
These intentions form the basis of the ongoing series of video projections; 'Duration Reveals Extension' which focus on the temporal qualities of spatial perception, aided by the phenomena of the afterimage; ie the inverted 'ghost' image that remains temporarily on the retina when we witness a bright fleeting image in a darkened environment. This piece explores how we might read re-presentations of place by building simplified drawings of the installation's architectural environment onto the viewer’s retina as a series of sequenced afterimages.
