The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, drawing together a wide range of new work by both established and unknown living artists. Now in its 240th year, the exhibition includes around 1,200 works and the majority of works are for sale

An artist may enter a maximum of two works for the consideration of the judges, for a handling charge of £25.00 per work. The theme for 2009 is Making Space, but adherence to this is not a condition of entry and all submissions will be welcome. Please note that the deadline for purchasing an Entry Form online is Tuesday 3 March and we will no longer be sending forms abroad after this date. Artists in the UK may purchase forms until Friday 13 March, by telephoning.

The Core Program, based in Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, awards one and two year residencies to highly motivated, exceptional visual artists and art scholars who have completed their undergraduate or graduate training but have not yet fully developed a professional career. Residents engage in ongoing dialogue with each other and with leading figures in art and criticism who are brought in as visitors. Each artist-resident is given approximately 450 square feet of private studio space, 24-hour access to school facilities and equipment, and a $10,000 annual stipend. The residency term is nine months, from September to May, and is renewable for a second term.

The Core Program attracts a diverse array of applicants from across the US and abroad. Residents are chosen by a jury of professional artists, art historians and critics based on quality of work. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 1, 2009.

1. Visual Artists Residency Application

Visual artists must submit an online application. There is a $10 application fee, which is paid online by credit card. Please note that the online system will NOT accept applications after midnight, April 1st. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO UPLOAD YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS!

All applications will include the following:

1. 10 images total (this includes details) of work completed during the last two years. The images will need to be labeled with title, size, media, and date. We will be accepting video and sound work. Images must be under 2MB file size each, saved as jpg, png, or gif. Optimal size for good image quality and fast upload is 1280 x 1280 pixels @ 72 dpi. Video must be under 20MB per sample, saved as flv, mov, or wmv.
2. Résumé/CV
3. Statement of intent (800 words max.) This is an important part of your application. There is no specific format for the statement.
4. Three letters of recommendation, which will be mailed directly to the Core Program. These letters must be received by April 1st.

The Sharadin Art Gallery at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania requests proposals from artists, craftspersons, and designers for the production of an original, temporary, site-specific installation for our exhibition space.

The artwork will remain on view from January 29 – March 5, 2010. The selected artist (or artist team) will be awarded $10,000. The award must cover all material and labor costs associated with the production of the work, all travel expense to and from our site, all incidental costs, meals, and all artist fees and honoraria. The university will provide housing one block from the gallery (Main Street Inn). A group of Kutztown University students will be available to assist with the physical production of the selected proposal.

Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, located an hour north of Philadelphia, and two hours west of New York City, has an enrollment of 10,000+ students. Each year, our College of Visual and Performing Arts awards approximately 225 undergraduate degrees in Communication Design, Fine Arts, Art Education, and Crafts. Our Visual Arts programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

THE BERGEN BIENNIAL CONFERENCE

As scholars and curators have recently acknowledged, the history of exhibitions is both one of the most vital and, paradoxically, ignored narratives of our cultural history. And given the increasing role of biennials and other perennial exhibitions of contemporary art in contemporary culture, it seems all the more necessary to critically examine them today. The impetus to do so now comes in response to the City of Bergen's plans to establish a biennial for contemporary art in Bergen, Norway, for which the Bergen Kunsthall has taken up the task of organizing an international conference and think tank to study and discuss the status of the biennial as an exhibition model, and also to launch a debate concerning the plans for a biennial in Bergen.

The aims of the Bergen Biennial Conference, poised to be one of the most extensive examinations of the biennial phenomenon to date, are to identify and explore existing 'biennial knowledge' from different regions of the world and to incite new critical thinking and writing on recurrent large-scale art exhibitions—their history, socio-political and economical contexts, as well as their impact on artistic and curatorial practices.

Taking research as its starting point, the Bergen Biennial Conference will bring together an international group of curators, critics, artists, and thinkers so as to benefit from their discussions of their findings, and create the occasion to reflect collectively about the practice and potential of biennials as institutions. The event's discursive format—a combination of symposium and think tank—made up of three days of lectures as well as seminar style workshops with young and leading professionals in the field will be complemented with a two-volume reader. The first volume will include existing seminal texts on biennials from around the world, and a second volume will be composed of newly commissioned texts and a report on the event. On the occasion of the conference, the archive on international biennials that was conceived as part of the 28th São Paolo Biennial and constituting the most comprehensive documentation source on biennials anywhere, will be present and ava ilable for consultation in the Bergen Kunsthall.

Call for articles: As the first step in this project, and in order to compile the first volume's comprehensive reader about biennials, we are calling for already existing (published or unpublished, recent or older) articles from around the world and in any language on the biennial as a format or phenomenon (i.e. not reviews of a particular edition of a biennial but more comprehensive, researched articles on the larger biennial question). We ask that you submit articles that you may have written or know about, which constitute a seminal reflection on the subject of perennial exhibitions. Please include full contact information or publication information for previously published texts. All submissions will be considered for the creation of a biennial bibliography, a new reference tool aiming to be beneficial for all professionals working in the field. A selection of texts will be translated and published, with prior permission of the author.

Shortness - a very short conference and a very long dinner

This event will bring together practitioners and theoreticians of the humanities, arts and sciences to extol or berate, to discuss, explore and explain shortness in all its spatial and temporal manifestations.

Topics that Shortness aims to cover include: aphorisms, txt msgs, short attention spans, nanophilology, music samples, ephemeral relationships, short narratives, punch lines, orgasms and other short-lived entities and phenomena (insects and fashion). 

The conference itself will only last a few hours and will be followed by a very long dinner. Guests will be entertained by short dinner speeches and the whole event will be supplemented by short films and various interventions.

This call invites submissions for presentations or performances of up to 7 minutes to take place during the long dinner. Please note that we cannot cover any expenses incurred nor can we accommodate installations.

Speakers include DJ Spooky, Sadie Plant, Tom Shakespeare, Clare Wigfall and Steven Connor amongst others. The Compère for the dinner will be Nicholas Parsons.

Please send an abstract of no more than 200 words to the organisers and include a short bio of no more than 100 words.

Submission guidelines for The Front Room banner project

Artist's projects must be:
1. EITHER easily removable OR able to be left outside indefinitely.
2. Weather proof. The banner/installation should be able to endure wind, rain, snow, and weather conditions common to Brooklyn.
3. Theft proof. Artist's should include in their proposals an explanation of how the piece will prevail against theft attempts.
4. The projects should not involve damage to the building's facade. Projects that do not involve drilling into the facade are preferred.
5. Safe. The project must not pose any danger to passersby.

 

Submitted proposals should include the following:
1. Please write a description of the banner/installation you wish to propose. Include a description of the materials, the dimensions, installation and theft proofing methods. For advice on installating your project please contact the gallery.
2. Please include at least one sketch or photo of the banner/installation.
3. A résumé
4. Return postage if you wish to have your materials returned.

Please note: Past banner projects have used a flag pole which extends from the gallery facade. Artists are welcome to propose banners that use the existing pole. However, banners/installations that do not incorporate the pole are EQUALLY WELCOME.

MANDATE :
As part of its 2009-10 programming, Québec City artist-run centre l’Œil de Poisson is offering to all artists, the chance to present his or her work in its main gallery following an in-house production residency.

The residency will take place over a three-months period in the centre’s workshops.

CONTEXT :
The residency is designed for artists who require the use of our wood and/or metal shops for the entire three-months period in order to realize an installation or sculptural or multidisciplinary work that incorporates materials and techniques that can only be handled in the shops.

The artist chosen for the residency will be provided with accommodations and a per diem for the entire period : from October 26th 2009 to January 18th, 2010.

The exhibition that follows the three-months residency will be part of l’Œil de Poisson’s programming for its main gallery. The exhibition will take place from January 16th to February 15th, 2010.

While developing the project, the artist will have access to all the equipment contained in the wood and metal shops : a vast common space where many artists from the Québec City region work under the guidance of professional technicians.

The bursaries offer the opportunity to use Lighthouse’s Digital Lounge, in central Brighton, free of charge. The Digital Lounge is a multi-purpose flexible space which accommodates up to 50 people and is equipped with a state-of-the-art digital projector.
