Meaningful participation by a range of community members is central to the Commissions' aims, Stream would prefer an artist experienced in engaging with members of the public and the complexities that this involves.

The Hors Pistes film festival offers a showcase to videos and films that move away from traditional genres to blend fiction with documentary, contemporary art or experimental formats. The festival will be held from 19 to 28 February 2010 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Work of between 25 and 65 minutes in length completed after January 2008 in either 16 or 35 mm film format or in Beta or mini DV video are eligible. There is no submission fee and works in languages other than French or English must be subtitled in English. A royalty fee of Euro100 will be paid to the owner of selected works which will be chosen by a committee. Participants whose work has been selected will be notified by email before 15 February 2010.

Europa Neurotisch is the second part of the Petersburg Project Space excursion into Europe. The first part was held in November 2008, and was based on the question how do artist react to, and deal with the concept Europe. For the second part we would like to raise the question: what is the image of Europe? How does it look? How do artists visually deal with the continent they live in, or look at from the outside?

Artists, need CASH?? Do you have surplus ART??  Clear out your studios and make way for new work while earning extra cash to continue your practice -- the Seeking Art Bargain Basement is back!

Originally located in a booth at Version Festival's NFO XPO in April 2009, this experimental art space is returning, this time in the storefront at Co-Prosperity Sphere.  The Bargain Basement will have a grand re-opening on November 20th to coincide with the Select Media Festival and will remain open throughout the month for the holiday season.

Bargain basements first appeared in 1909 as an effort by department stores to move unwanted merchandise.  Selling surplus goods at discounted prices cleared the way for new products, catered to the consumer's desire to acquire hidden gems for less than their worth, and allowed lower-income shoppers to participate in the trendy new world of mass-produced goods.  To celebrate the 100th anniversary, the Seeking Art Bargain Basement is applying the same economic and psychological principals to the art market, uniting artists' leftover work with shoppers seeking affordable art.  Unlike the products at Robb Pruitt's "Flea Market" or Martha Rosler's "Garage Sale," the items at the Bargain Basement will be new, with the artists themselves determining the value of selling the work.  All works will be accepted, inviting the viewer to participate in the process of discovery and the purchaser to determine what is of value as an art piece to them.  All proceeds go directly to the artist. 

In a world of simultaneous surplus and exclusion, the Bargain Basement seeks to raise issues inherent in today's art market including the accessibility of art, the practice of limiting dispersal to drive up value, the economy of art objects (and art non-objects), the speculative nature of the art market, and whether there is a stigma for artists to exhibit or sell in certain venues.

The Seeking Art Bargain Basement is a project by Hui-min Tsen.

Past participants consisted of over 30 national and international artists including Alice Bradshaw, Sarah Bishop, Lisa Bulawsky, Helen Maurene Cooper, Alex Dean, Jonny Detiger, Rose DiSalvo, Alice Evans, Ellen Ferrin, Peter Hoffman, Amanda Innis, James Kao, Julia Klein, Jamie Kreher, Alex Lee, Lemeh, 42 (Michele  Santini & Lorenza Paolini), Johannah Silva, Wen-ti Tsen, Dan S. Wang, Philip von Zweck, and more. 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Each work must be priced by the artist between $0 and $200 with all proceeds from the sale going directly to the artist.   There is no entry fee for submissions, but all mailed entries must include return postage.  Proceeds from sales will be sent back with any unsold work.  All mediums are accepted (framed or unframed) including sketches, multiples, prints, posters, books, partial editions, unfinished series, rough drafts,  remnants and documentation, artists proofs, paintings, sculptures, etc. Multiple submission accepted from each artist.  A TV and VCR will be on site for screening audio and visual submissions.  

All submissions should include the name of the piece, series (if applicable), email or website of the artist, year, and price.  If you are willing to accept offers on a lower price, include a note with the lowest price you are willing to accept.  Please include protective sleeves and cardboard whenever possible, to help insure work does not get damaged during the show.

All work must be received before November 13th, 2009

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents MediaModes, an interdisciplinary graduate conference examining the contemporary dialogue between art and technology. Co-sponsored by the MFA Computer Art and the MFA Art Criticism and Writing Departments at SVA, MediaModes provides a critical forum for current scholarship exploring the juncture of media, theory, criticism, and the visual arts. Jonathan Crary, Meyer Schapiro Professor of Modern Art and Theory at Columbia University, will deliver the keynote address, commenting on the human and social consequences of 24/7 technological culture.

Crary has written extensively on the confluence of art, technology and mass media. His books include Techniques of the Observer: On Vision and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century (MIT Press, 1992), Suspensions of Perception: Attention, Spectacle, and Modern Culture (MIT Press, 2001) and Incorporations (Zone Books, 1992). He is also a founding editor of Zone Books, widely noted for its publication of major works in philosophy, criticism, art, social theory and history. Crary has been the recipient of National Endowment for the Arts, Mellon, Getty and Guggenheim fellowships and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

Twenty-four current students and recent alumni from graduate programs throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia will present on the following six topics: Body, Identity and the Virtual Space; Spatial Experience and Social Networking; Perception, Information and Temporality; The Spectator and the Spectacle: Mediating Differences/Technology and Politics; Processes and Aesthetics of Digital Art; and Sound Junctures. SVA faculty members will moderate

MediaModes conference participants represent a wide cross-section of disciplines, ranging from visual and cultural studies to interactive media arts; from criticism to curatorial practice; and from performance art to art history. They will address critical and analytical issues related to the connection between art and technology from a multiplicity of viewpoints, methodologies and theoretical approaches.

This new edition will focus on the implications of using data structure visualization to aid in public processes of decision-making. The goal is to offer new ways to make public data available to everyone, in formats that make it possible to reuse them and foster citizen innovation processes. Topics such as water wasting, patent registrations, Internet piracy, H1N1evolution or the use of social networks in politics will be addressed.

Collaborators can join any of the developing teams that will carry out the selected proposals, depending on their particular interests and skills, thus contributing with their knowledge and skills and at the same time learning from the other group members and from the leading tutors: Ben Cerveny (Stamen), Aaron Koblin, and Manuel Lima, with the support of Bestiario collective.

Collaborators' profile: The call is aimed at artists, engineers, programmers, software developers, designers, film & video makers, architects, hackers, psychologists, sociologists, journalists, ecologists, physicists, chemists, biologists or any other person interested in participating in the development of selected proposals.

The Fondazione di Venezia is pleased to announce the second phase of the residency program Art Enclosures which began in 2008 in cooperation with Polymnia and the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice, with the aim of building bridges between local realities and contemporary arts production from abroad.

The upcoming residency will take place in Venice from 20th January to 20th April 2010. The project consists of a three-month residency period offering a series of activities and an opportunity for visibility to two emerging artists under 40 from the African continent.

For each artist the project will cover travel expenses and lodging in the apartments of Palazzo Carminati, provided by Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, plus a monthly grant of 700 EURO (pre-taxes) to meet living and travelling costs while in Venice.

The programme makes the spaces of the ateliers of the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa available to the artists, as well as part of the materials necessary to create works of art to be completed by the end of the three-month period.

The visiting artists will also have the opportunity to be involved in studio activities, conferences and public meetings organized for them, and thus come into contact with other local and international artists and the cultural activities run by the Fondazione di Venezia and the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa.

Finally, the artists will be provided with the chance to visit some of the main exhibitions and museums in the area free of charge.

At the end of the three-month residency, a final exhibition of the works produced will be held.

As a Blue Sky Project Artist-In-Residence, you will cross-pollinate with other practicing artists, collaborate with teens, expand your ideas and add artistic breadth and depth to the Dayton community.

Relocated in 2009 to Ohio from our original location in Illinois, artists gather for eight weeks from mid-June to mid August at the University of Dayton, located 2 miles from downtown Dayton.  Monday - Thursday, from 10-3:30 are devoted to intensive collaborations between each individual artist and a small group of six to eight local teen participants, culminating in a final exhibition. Artists-in-Residence invent the remaining structure, working together or individually on projects. Our hope is that the projects will seep out, intervene, enhance and impact the community.

Your recent studio practice and new ideas should provide the foundation for your activities. Because of the collaborative nature of Blue Sky Project, your project must have an open-ended structure.  Your project must be achievable in eight weeks, within a $1,000 budget (excluding final exhibition expenses) and must engage others in its articulation and production. The rest is up to you. Previous projects have included: sculptural sound installation, video installation, performance, musical composition, dance installation, 2D visual-art and photography, self-published magazines, and site-specific interventions.

TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary Summer Residency Program

In cooperation with the City of Calgary’s newly developed Watermarks project, TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary is seeking three artists or artist collectives to participate in 3 intensive 3 week long residencies along the Bow River during the months of July, August, and September 2010. International or Canadian artists of all disciplines are encouraged to propose new projects to be developed over the course of the residency period. An exhibition, performance, or presentation of the work will culminate each residency. These projects could include (but are not limited to) durational performances, public or social sculpture, interactive or participatory projects, interventions into the river environment, or site-specific hybrids that utilize a number of these different strategies. Projects submitted for the residencies should focus on an engagement with the history, geography, and social and environmental significance of the Bow River as outlined in the Watermarks description below. Production budgets, accommodations, travel costs and CARFAC fees will be paid to all participating artists. Final proposals for the project must be received at the gallery by December 18, 2009.

Each of the residencies will be based in or around TRUCK’s Contemporary Art Mobile Public Exhibition Rig (CAMPER) a refurbished 1970’s era camper van that has been used for residencies, exhibitions, screenings, and performances in public space for the last four years. Projects need not be specifically developed for CAMPER (rather consider CAMPER as a potential staging ground, hub, or platform from which to develop your project). Artists are encouraged to consider the full length of the Bow River Watershed as part of the potential space in which the project could take place. Artists are also encouraged to consider that their project could last the entire duration of the 3 week residency period, involve numerous public presentations (lectures, screenings, panel discussions, performances), or culminate in a final event of a more limited duration.

About Watermarks

With historic Memorial Drive as the venue, Watermarks will celebrate the cultural, historic, social and environmental legacy of the Bow River. The goal of Watermarks is to foster a series of temporary public art projects that celebrate the river, enrich our experiences, and build awareness, understanding and appreciation of our watershed. As part of the project artists are invited to consider: 

·       The watershed as ‘the big idea’.
·       The concept of a city within a river, and a river within a city.
·       The opportunity to build upon public understanding of the river, the watershed and our  relationship with it.
·       The celebration of collective memory as it relates to Memorial Drive and the Bow River.
·       The ephemeral nature of the river as a finite and crucial resource.
·       The opportunity to engage and inspire.

Your submission should be in an electronic format on disc, and should include: 

1.     Proposal (maximum of 1 page): Clearly describe the proposed work. Provide details about any special requirements, including equipment needs. 
2.     Artist Statement (maximum of 1 page): Contextualizes the work submitted within your artistic practice.

This Studio Program takes place in the Carriage House at the Islip Art Museum.  The galleries are transformed into working space during the winter months.

3 artists will be selected who wish to use the space as a studio from February though April, 2010 (3 months).  Each artist will be given a large, private working area with 24-hour access to the building.

The Museum wants to give artists an opportunity to work on demanding projects that would normally be difficult to do without the space offered by the Carriage House.  Be sure to write a one-page proposal (max.) describing your project and why the space offered would be beneficial to the progress or completion of such a project.  During their residency, artists may use the space however they see fit; to begin work, complete work, and display it to the public, collectors, or dealers.  There will be an Open-Studio at the end of the program and the Museum will cater and promote the event.  Other benefits include a small catalog and at least one studio visit from a prominent person in the Arts.  Each artist has an opportunity to receive a monthly stipend if selected for the residency.
