International Essay Prize
American Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art (circa 1500–1980). The winning manuscript will advance understanding of American art, demonstrating new findings and original perspectives, and will be translated and published in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s scholarly journal, which covers the cost of image rights and reproduction. The winner receives $1,000 and a $2,000 stipend to travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with museum staff and fellows and make an informal presentation.

Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowships - The Courtauld Institute of Art, London / Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, Paris
The Courtauld Institute of Art, London
This two-year postdoctoral fellowship in American art is integrated with the postdoctoral fellowship program of the Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum, which supports advanced inquiry in the history of art, conservation, and museum studies. The fellow will teach three historical American art courses, participate in scholarly activities organized by The Courtauld Institute of Art, and organize an international scholarly event. The stipend for the two-year fellowship is $121,550, including health benefits, travel, research, and lodging
Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, Paris
This two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art is focused on the history of American art and transatlantic exchange and is shared between the departments of art history and American studies at the École Normale Supérieure, the Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense, and the Université de Tours. The fellow will teach undergraduate and master’s-level students, participate in local seminars, and organize an international scholarly event. The stipend for the two-year fellowship is $102,000, including health benefits, travel, research, and lodging.

Terra Foundation Fellowships in American Art
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

These one-year residential fellowships at the Smithsonian American Art Museum support full-time independent and dissertation research by scholars from abroad researching historical American art (pre-1980) or by U.S. scholars, particularly those investigating international contexts for American art. Predoctoral fellows receive $30,000, plus research and travel allowances; senior or postdoctoral fellows receive $45,000, plus research and travel allowances.
