The School of Sound is a unique 4 -day series of masterclasses exploring the creative art of sound with image.  Ideal for producers, directors, editors, animators, dancers and everyone working with sound. Some student bursaries available.  The event takes place April 3-6 2013 at the Southbank Centre, London 

Since 1998, the SOS has established itself as the major forum for the creative use of sound in media and the arts. The four-day masterclass series introduces the audience to an eclectic group of speakers from cinema, theatre, radio, dance, sound art, music, architecture and games. They include professional practitioners, artists and educators who reveal the methods and creative thinking that lie behind the most effective uses of sound and music in screen, installation and audio production.

The discussions have grown wider and deeper but at the heart of every presentation is how we experience sound, that is, how we listen.

The SOS is a meeting of practitioners, artists, academics and students from around the world. In 2011, three hundred people from forty countries attended the SOS, immersing themselves in a programme that is as useful for the director, producer or screenwriter as it is for the sound designer and composer. Sound in storytelling, sonic environments, human sound perception – the topics range from the practical to the aesthetic to the abstract.

Scare in the Community are looking for submissions for an exhibition that scrutinizes assumptions about art's commercial value.  

Artists can submit work in any medium that addresses themes of selling out, commodification and the link between art and money. Non-commercial artists have always feared the corruption of their ideological position by 'selling-out', i.e. engaging with the reality of commercial practices.  This perspective is reinforced amongst intellectuals with expectations that serious artists must stay clear of the corrupting effects of financial considerations for their work. However, the general public still sees financial success as the main indicator of an art works relevance.

The exhibition will take place in February 2013 at The Princess Alice, a pub on the edge of the financial quagmire of the City of London. Installed across two floors as well as the roof top of the pub the show will aim to engage the customers at the pub in a commercial as well as critical manner. All artworks will be for sale on a 10% commission basis.

Postcards From the Edge is a Visual AIDS benefit show and sale of original, postcard-sized artworks by established and emerging artists. All artwork is exhibited anonymously. While buyers receive a list of all participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until after purchased. With the playing field leveled, all participants can take home a piece by a famous artist, or someone who is just making their debut. Nonetheless, collectors walk away with a piece of art they love, knowing that the money raised will support HIV prevention and AIDS Awareness.

Zendai Himalayas exhibition is a large leisure center where are concentrate restaurant, shops, all major international firms,etc, plus the interest that is awakening in China for contemporary art, this year will also feature exhibition halls with works for sale.

Pantocrator Gallery will present background that we have in China, but we believe it is an excellent opportunity for other Western artists can make known his work with saleability. Subsequently, if no sale, Pantocrator Gallery will keep these works as gallery fund with the intention of performing several group exhibitions throughout the year 2013 in our center of M50 Shanghai. The unsold works will be returned to Barcelona between October and January 2014 by Pantocrator. And from Barcelona will be sent to the addresses individually by each artist that is from outside Barcelona.

The steps involved are:

1. Send to [email protected]  image of the work you want to expose. Detailing the work measures, technical and brief summary of the artist in English. Approximate Retail Price including 50% of commision for gallery.

2. Subsequently, the selected works will be sent to China from Barcelona, with all others.

Each artist must pay the approximate price of the frame and a percentage for shipping, we will provide advance prices as measured by the works.

4.Each artist must sent his work to Barcelona. And must transferred to the bank account of Pantocrator Gallery, the amount for the framework, which will vary depending on the size and number of works, plus the percentage for shipment to China, that in a tube is usually cheaper and less problematic when it comes to pay customs .

-Example: a piece of paper of 40X30cm can cost:

10€ frame + 10€ shipping = 20 €.
Two works of the same dimensions = 35 €
Three works of the same dimensions = 45 €

-Deadline for sending the images to the selection is next Thursday, December 13 and the deadline for sending the tube to China on Dec. 22.

Convention T - Wysing Arts Centre Residencies 2013, Cambridge, UK

Over the last five years at Wysing, we have experimented with different programmatic structures in order to support artists to make new work. During 2013 we want to further explore how structures, some visible and others implied, might be used to uncover meaning, narrative, paradox or indeed certainty.

The title, Convention T, refers to logician, mathematician and philosopher Alfred Tarski (1901-1983) who applied logic to sentence structure in order to make the truth visible through language. Tarski created a structure, a meta-language, that could be applied to real, everyday, language in order to generate true statements, known as T sentences - “A and B” is true if and only if A is true and B is true translates as Snow is white if and only if snow is white.

We are seeking proposals from artists who are interested in applying structures or systems to generate new work, readings and perspectives.

Our 2013 residencies build on our current residency programme in which artists Salvatore Arancio, Ed Atkins, Jonathan Baldock, Edwin Burdis, Nicolas Deshayes, Jess Flood-Paddock, Emma Hart, Flora Parrott, Nilsson Pflugfelder, Philomene Pirecki, Elizabeth Price and Stuart Whipps, alongside musician Luke Abbott, writer Patrick Coyle and
Cambridge based scientists and experts, have come together at our rural site to explore literary metaphors that reflected other worlds and the merging of fact and fiction; The Cosmos, The Mirror and The Forest. Work created during these residencies will be brought together in an exhibition at Wysing, in Febuary 2013

Our new residencies, which are funded by Arts Council England and Paul Hamlyn Foundation, will be offered to eight artists who will be able to work from studios at Wysing during two periods: spring and autumn 2013. Four artists will be invited, and four recruited through this Open Call.

During residency periods we will organise a series of talks and conferences to unfold some of the thinking behind the programme and artists are also invited to propose papers, talks or performances that might be included in this programme

There is no form to fill in to apply for residencies. Instead we ask artists to provide the information listed below. We prefer emailed applications as a single PDF file (for this we recommend PDF Forge) and will only accept applications below 3mb in size. Or we are happy to receive MP3/4 files or CDs/DVDs instead of written applications.

Proposals for an ambitious site-specific piece of work - Leeds Inspired, UK

Leeds Inspired invites artists, arts organisations and producers to submit proposals for an ambitious site-specific piece of work that will surprise and delight audiences in Leeds. This exciting commission will take place during October - December 2013 and will produce a new piece of work that culminates in a performance, spectacle or installation with cross generational appeal. The project must be easily found by audiences and capable of bringing together a large number of people in a high quality shared experience that is free or low cost to attend. It should resonate with the city’s residents but also have regional and national appeal. We are particularly interested in proposals that have thought about ways in which audiences are able to engage with the event to create a memorable cultural experience.

The work should take place in the autumn/winter of 2013, a time of year when Leeds comes alive with a cultural programme that includes Light Night, Love Arts Festival, Black History Month, Morley Literature Festival, Leeds Film Festival, Thought Bubble and Leeds Digital Festival. In November 2013 these annual events are joined by the Rugby League World Cup which is holding two matches in the city. The last quarter of the year is also significant for everyone celebrating Eid, Christmas, Diwali, Hanukkah, Durga Pooja and other cultural festivals.

This commission will produce a public facing event that complements and strengthens the city’s cultural programme during this time of year. Culture plays a hugely important role in the economic and social life of the city and the successful project will help to raise the profile of the city with both residents and visitors, and reaffirm Leeds as a great place to live, work and play.

Expressions of interest are invited from experienced professional artists, practitioners and organisations of any discipline for a performance, spectacle or installation that is inspired by and inspires the city.

Open Call: Projects for the Museum of Arte Útil

The Museum of Arte Útil is a collaboration between the artist Tania Bruguera, the Queens Museum of Art, New York and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. The Museum of Arte Útil is the result of Tania Bruguera's decade of research into a concept that emphasizes effectiveness and implementation over representation, looking at historical and contemporary examples of alternative strands in socially informed art practice.

"Útil" as a term refers to something being useful. But it goes further than the English translation, encompassing the idea of a tool or device. Bruguera states that "Arte Útil" moves beyond a propositional format, into one that actively creates, develops and implements new functionalities to benefit society at large."

The project will comprise research, an online platform, an association of Arte Útil practitioners, a series of public projects, a lab presentation at the Queens Museum of Art beginning in February 2013, culminating in the transformation of the old building of the Van Abbemuseum into the Museum of Arte Útil in the Fall of 2013 and a publication. The aim is to present a survey of past and present projects that are rooted in the notion of art's use to its users and to society at large. Central to the project's various forms is this open call.

The notion of what constitutes Arte Útil has been arrived at via a set of criteria that Bruguera and the participating museums' curators have formulated. These criteria will set the parameters of the project and its working methodology. Arte Útil projects should:

1- Propose new uses for art within society
2- Challenge the field within which it operates (civic, legislative, pedagogical, scientific, economic, etc)
3- Be 'timing specific,' responding to current urgencies
4- Be implemented and function in real situations
5- Replace authors with initiators and spectators with users
6- Have practical, beneficial outcomes for its users
7- Pursue sustainability whilst adapting to changing conditions
8- Re-establish aesthetics as a system of transformation

We are inviting the public to submit information on past or ongoing projects that align with these criteria. Submitted projects should meet as many of these criteria as possible. The selected projects will be listed on http://www.arteutil.net/, to be launched in February and will be considered for inclusion in the artist association, the exhibition at the Queens Museum, the Van Abbemuseum, and/or the publication. Projects can be submitted by anyone, from any field, and need not be submitted by the initiators of the project.

De Appel Curatorial Programme, 2013–2014, Amsterdam

Initiated in 1994 as an in-house international training trajectory for young curators, the Curatorial Programme of de Appel arts centre offers its participants a condensed package of professional encounters, hands-on experiences and skills that can be seen as instruments for the further development of a professional career. Encompassing a wide array of sometimes contrasting voices, the programme pays attention to the various approaches that exist and arise in contemporary curating, thus mapping the dynamic professional field in all its complexity and confusion, its fragmentation and fluidity.

The Curatorial Programme is not a ‘school’: it does not grade or grant study credits, nor does it provide a singular school of thought.Based on a ‘learning by doing’ principle, the programme ‘assigns’ its participants with the collective development of a final project and creates a sub-environment for professional reflection within de Appel arts centre. Apart from regular sessions with the tutorial team, the programme also offers various excursions (including a research trip to a destination outside of Western Europe), practice-related assignments, and the opportunity to meet with a large number of artists, curators, critics and other international professionals, through thematic seminars, studio visits and other encounters. 1. A letter of motivation in which you state your personal drive as well as your expectations of the programme.
2. A proposal for a project (maximum 4000 words, approximately 8 pages A4) including concept and location of the project (main focus, explanation of context and relevance), the participating artists (including some image material), a realistic budget, a publicity plan (not mandatory). Please note that this is a hypothetical project to help familiarize the jury with your interests, ideas and curatorial approach.
3. A CV, including an extensive description of your relevant work experience.
4. Two written references of (former) tutors, professors or employers, in English.

On the basis of the submitted documents, twelve candidates will be short-listed. These candidates will be invited to come to Amsterdam in the third week of March for an interview with an international jury, who will select the final six participants of the Curatorial Programme 2013–2014.

Hydro Active City, Gdansk, Poland

“HYDRO ACTIVE CITY” is an open international contest searching for art projects to be presented in the public space. We are looking for art works using digital media technologies in a creative approach to public space. Interactive art works involving people in the Baltic countries are looked upon as especially interesting. The winning art works will be shown presented in Gdansk during an international seminar on art and public space, held in between May 16-18th 2013.

The contest is organized by the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdansk as part of the international ART LINE project, which is co-financed with funds from the European Regional Development Fund operating within the South Baltic Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2007-2013

 

Thematic Approach:
Water is an element that both connects and separates all the partners of the ART LINE project. This theme has become for us a natural source of inspiration to embark on a quest in search of “hydro-active” works of art. In our understanding, hydro active projects are those inspired by water, to the fullest extent of the term – geographical, chemical, hydrological, literary or symbolic. They either artistically explore the term or use water as a material. “Active” element of the contest requires the artists to create projects that engage viewer into an active experiencing of art. The projects should in a natural way correspond and enliven the area of Gdansk running along the channel of the Radunia river (from Wielkie Młyny Street to Krosna Street). They should serve as a hard to resist invitation for local residents to go out and stroll in the rays of the May sun. All works are expected to be based on new means of expression and should be entirely or partially realized in digital technology

Target Group:
The contest is open to individual artists as well as teams from the Baltic states – i.e. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Germany and Denmark. The teams need to be composed of a maximum of three people. The contest also welcomes collaborations between artists researchers, scientists and technologists

Laureates:
The authors of the 3 winning projects chosen by an international jury will be invited to cooperate with us and complete their works. Each winning contestant will receive remuneration of EUR 2000 (gross) and a budget of EUR 2000 (gross) to realize the concept. The organizers will also cover the costs of accommodation and travel to Gdansk connected with production and opening of the exhibition (spring 2013).

The chosen projects shall be completed and presented in the Gdansk city space, in a virtual gallery available on ART LINE’s website and may also be presented in partner regions
