The Visual Art Department
The Visual Art department derives from the early Arts and Craft movement and the German Bauhaus’ vision of integrating art in everyday-life. The department seeks to elaborate on the relationship between art and life, on matters of materiality (production, sustainability, the global), on design and architecture, and on artistic practice in social and political contexts in a contemporary perspective. As part of this ambition, the department will start up with a new MA program in Art and Public Space in the autumn of 2014.

Master of Art and Public Space
The Master of Art and Public Space is a new, two-year, in-depth programme, which focuses on how art and artistic practices operate in, use and relate to different public spaces beyond the traditional art institutions. The core of the programme consists of developing and creating public art projects, as well as analysing and exploring art in the context of different public spaces, reception contexts and social structures. The study programme will provide practical and theoretical insights into public art as a diverse and complex area, and is intended to contribute to innovative approaches and artistic research and development within the area of art and public space.   

Job description
We are seeking a Professor/Associate Professor for a 70% position, who will have the artistic and pedagogical responsibility for the development of the new Master of Art and Public Space programme. The position will involve building an academically attractive study programme based on a clear vision of the potential and challenges associated with public art. The Professor/Associate Professor should also promote greater reflection around the area of public art in general and the MA in particular. 

The applicant must be fluent in both spoken and written English. It is a pre-requisite for the position that the applicant is either competent in Norwegian or will acquire basic Norwegian language skills. The position is for a fixed term of six years, with the possibility of extending for a further six years. In special circumstances, a shorter contract period may be considered.

Salary
The position of Professor will be remunerated according to pay grade 68-77 (572 700 - 689 200 NOK per annum) and the position of Associate Professor LR 24 alt. 5 will be remunerated according to pay grade 61-69 (503 300 - 583 800 NOK per annum) according to the regulations for public employees. For exceptionally qualified applicants a higher salary may be considered. A 2% statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM FOR PRINTMAKERS | Kala Art Institute, CA

Residencies starting in November, December, January, February, or March

Artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo-processes, book arts and digital media including video production can apply to become an Artist-in-Residence at Kala Art Institute. Residency applications are accepted online three times per year. Artists who apply for residency should be familiar with at least one of the media offered at Kala. Considerations for acceptance are conceptual creativity and technical knowledge. Kala encourages use of both traditional and new technologies, and their admixture. 

Resident artists receive 24-hour access to the printmaking workshop and/or electronic media center, individual storage space, possible exposure on Kala's website and in other exhibitions at Kala or outside exhibition spaces, and participation in a vital, international artistic community. Artists also receive a 20% discount on classes and private tutoring offered by Kala. You will find out if you have been accepted approximately two weeks after the application deadline. Kala's Studio Managers sometimes require the artist to complete certain classes or technical tutorials before beginning the residency. If this is the case, the artist is given a list of the classes/tutorials required. At this point the artist may accept or reject the offer of a residency. 

If the residency offer is accepted, the artist completes the required conditions within a reasonable time frameif needed (approximately 2 months), signs the residency contract, and pays a $100 security deposit and the first month's fee. The Studio and EMC Managers give the artist studio/equipment orientations.

The History of Art program supports scholarly projects that will enhance the appreciation and understanding of European art and architecture. Brighton's experimental international out sound and art festival returns for ten days of performances, screenings, readings, workshops and more. 

The COOS film programm explores the crossover of experimental sound into moving image – from the direct colour fields and sonic loops of Bruce McClure to the early sound as image experiments of Steina Vasulka, from the handpainted super 8mm's and homebuilt electronics of Ian Helliwell to the dimestore psychodramas of George Kuchar. If you make films, videos, animations or any other moving image work and think it should screen at this festival – we’d like to see it. Submissions are accepted on DVD (any region), links to sites are also welcome. Screening formats will include 16mm, 8mm and digital projection

A Blade of Grass announces ABOG Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art

A Blade of Grass, a new funding organization that nurtures socially engaged art, is pleased to announce the launch of the ABOG Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art. Seven Fellows will be selected to receive an unrestricted stipend of 20,000 USD to realize an innovative community-based project. The program will also offer tailored professional support to socially engaged artists including documentation and assessment of each project, and workshops that teach skills that are particularly relevant to artists working directly with communities to enact social change. 

Through active training, incubator-style workshops and professional consultations, the artists will be given tools to evaluate their own progress, as well as gain feedback from peers, community stakeholders, and objective, third-party evaluators. These and other professional development opportunities will help artists to make this community-driven work more meaningful and influential to the populations they are serving. 

As another key benefit of the fellowship, A Blade of Grass will conduct interviews with each of the artists and produce three-to-five-minute documentaries on each project that will be accessible on the A Blade of Grass website. Such online resources will bring the experience of these works beyond the immediate community of impact and illustrate some of the distinct challenges and advantages presented by socially engaged art. This documentation will also complement the online debates, studies and resources that make up A Blade of Grass's "DISCUSS" forum, as well as its public programs, all of which will be structured around an annual theme drawn from the work of some or all of the selected fellows. Collectively, these resources will bring clarity and excitement to socially engaged art through inclusive discussions on key topics and through direct exposure to these and other ambitious artworks. 

Selection process
Artists nationwide are invited to submit proposals through a two-stage, open application process. A distinguished Selection Committee, made up of artists, educators, curators, critics and other art professionals, along with community leaders and advocates, will evaluate the proposals in terms of their artistic excellence, their ability to position artists in leadership roles to promote social change, and their relevance to communities.  Application guidelines are now available on the A Blade of Grass website. Letters of inquiry will be due Monday, December 2, 2013. Finalists will be invited to submit full applications in January 2014 and selections will be made and announced in April 2014. 

Informational workshops
A Blade of Grass will hold two informational Fellowship Workshops prior to each annual application deadline. This year, they will be held on September 17 and November 6. The Workshops will be open to all interested artists and are designed to bring artists face-to-face with former Fellows and staff, in order to provide a transparent overview of the ABOG SEA Fellowship experience, as well as introduce successful social engagement methods in general.  For those unable to attend, the workshops will be videotaped and made accessible online. The programs should help the artists determine if they are a good fit for the program and maximize their ability to construct a competitive proposal. Attendance is strongly encouraged.

Cda-Projects Grant for Artistic Research, Istanbul

Cda-Projects Grant has been offering a 10,000 EUR grant annually since 2011 to support the production of an artistic research project.

Projects
The grant aims at supporting and opening up discussions on artistic research to an expanded network through an open call. It encourages speculative approaches to how discourse is staged and how knowledge is produced, rethought and interwoven across disciplines. Without any limitations on the content, the proposed inquiries are expected to suggest new forms and methodologies by reflecting on contexts and conditions of the knowledge produced.

Publication
Cda-Projects Grant will also support a publication after the completion of the project that brings together discussions on the artistic research undertaken, including the questions raised, speculative analysis and the final outcome. 

The selection committee
The invited selection committee members are Gerard Byrne, Bassam El Baroni and Irit Rogoff. Iz Öztat will take part in the selection committee as Cda-Projects Grant Director.

Eligibility
Authors (includes artists, curators, writers, thinkers, etc.) of any nationality, regardless of age, can propose projects to be carried out individually or collectively. Applicants can submit an artistic research project that is currently in the production stage or one that is scheduled to be completed during the six-month period following the date of selection.

Assessment criteria
Project selection will be made after assessing the proposals considering the following criteria:
–Ability to speculate on what knowledge is and suggest new forms of knowledge production
–Ability to articulate an innovative methodology and form in relation to the content
–Project feasibility according to the complementary documents provided as well as the documentation for the proposed project
–A dynamic working methodology, which considers artistic practice from multiple viewpoints including theoretical, conceptual, aesthetic, pedagogical and beyond
–A willingness to take risks and try completely new and unfamiliar working methodologies

At some point many generations ago society reached a level where ordinary people could spend a lifetime perfecting their ability to mix and apply paint, in extraordinary ways. For only its second time in ten seasons Manifest will present a competitive group exhibition focused exclusively on painting. FRESH PAINT is a gallery exhibit that calls for works of painting by artists around the world as they carry the tradition forward, or reform it for another day.

This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type, style, or media of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental. The only criteria beyond excellent quality is that works must in some way represent an approach to painting.

FRESH PAINT, along with the concurrent AQUACHROME* (a companion exhibit of works of contemporary watercolor painting), will be the only exhibit featured in the galleries during this time frame. This broad view of painting is currently planned to be the debut exhibit in Manifest's newly expanded spaces (66% more gallery!).

Eligibility: FRESH PAINT is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works of art that qualify in some way as 'painting'.

Media: Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media. Not limited to pure 'painting on canvas'. We are eager to see how far the boundaries of Contemporary Painting reach. Manifest's carefully assembled juries change from project to project, and have no collective predisposition towards any particular kind or style of art.

Note about Watercolor: Works featuring watercolor as primary media are welcome in this jury, however artists are encouraged to submit such work to the separate concurrent exhibit AQUACHROME which will feature works of watercolor exclusively. These two projects will be exhibited simultaneously, but juried separately and not commingled.

Quite possibly the oldest form of painting, watercolor persists today, defying narrow categorization and broad stereotype. Practiced for centuries in concept development preliminary to 'finished' paintings made in oil or other scale-worthy durable media, watercolor also found favor with botanists, illustrators, and portraitists, and was applied to varied and countless surfaces.

The nature of the media itself represents a delicate and dictatorial transparency, fluidity, and a potential for expressive spontaneity. This not only makes it an ideal vehicle for contemporary art, but also one of training, intensity, philosophy, and play for any who practice it. Where an artist can easily dominate other painting media, forcing a will through viscous layers into a work of art like taming a wild horse, with watercolor there is dialog, compromise, and undeniable forthrightness. In this way the artist practicing watercolor works with a tiger in the room.
