About the fellowship
The Phillips Collection, in partnership with George Washington University (GW), offers a Postdoctoral Fellowship to support research and teaching on topics in American, European, or non-western art, from 1780 to the present. The fellow is expected to be in residence in Washington, D.C., at The Phillips Collection during the fall and spring semesters throughout the term of the fellowship. The fellow is also expected to teach one undergraduate or graduate course at the Center for the Study of Modern Art or at the George Washington University, present at least one public lecture at the Phillips, and participate in other programs and discussions with scholars, critics, museum staff, and students at the museum and the university. The appointment carries a departmental affiliation with the George Washington University's Department of Fine Arts and Art History and with The Phillips Collection. The fellow receives a stipend and generous benefits package, as well as various university/museum privileges, including access to facilities, libraries of institutions, equipment, support staff, curators, and faculty.

Selection committee
A panel of GW faculty and Phillips staff review the applications. Award recipient is notified within two months following the application deadline.

Requirements
The fellowship is open to untenured scholars who have received their PhDs within the past five years. Applicants must have successfully defended their thesis prior to the application deadline (no later than January 15, 2015) and their doctoral degree must be conferred no later than June 30, 2015, prior to the start day of July 1, 2015. Preference will be given to applicants whose projects focus on subjects related to the museum's areas of collecting and reinterpret the topic via innovative methodological approaches or alternative perspectives that may cross national boundaries and art-historical time periods.

The Logan Center Exhibitions Curator has overall responsibility for developing, enhancing, and supporting the integration of visual arts programming within the Logan Center. Working closely with the Departments of Visual Arts (DOVA) and its Open Practice Committee, Art History, Cinema and Media Studies, and the other arts programs that use the Logan Center, the Curator oversees the Logan Center Exhibitions program; develops visual arts programming in collaboration with faculty, students, University, and community partners; oversees exhibition planning, scheduling, and installation; supervises staff; develops and monitors budgets; teaches one jointly listed course in Art History / DOVA; and serves as a liaison with the visual arts community in Chicago and beyond. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, the Curator works in partnership with the DOVA/OPC Program Manager and works closely with the chairs of the Departments of Visual Arts and Art History, curators at the Neubauer Collegium, Smart Museum of Art, Arts + Public Life's Arts Incubator, and the Renaissance Society as well as the Logan Center Exhibitions Advisory Committee.

The Logan Center Exhibition Curator: Under general direction, manages all aspects of non-technical (not information technology or construction related) projects and provides a single point of contact for those projects. Takes projects from original concept through completion. Develops detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and status reports. Assembles a project team, assigns individual responsibilities, identifies appropriate resources needed, and develops schedules to ensure timely completion of projects. Conducts project meetings and is responsible for project tracking and analysis. Ensures adherence to quality standards and reviews project deliverables. Manages the integration of vendor tasks and tracks and reviews vendor deliverables. Provides analytical guidance to a project team. Recommends and takes action to direct the analysis and solutions of problems.  
 
The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts provides an environment that catalyzes creative inquiry and supports the artistic practice and scholarship of our students, faculty, and staff, often in partnership with the broader community. The 180,000-square-foot multidisciplinary University arts center is designed to encourage collaboration across the artistic spectrum. Skills & Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a visual art, art history, architecture, design or related field.
    Graduate degree strongly preferred.  
    Two years of experience leading or managing a non-collecting gallery or visual arts program required.
    Experience supervising staff required.
    Five years of experience in a range of visual arts practices and art production processes preferred.
    Five years of experience with art preparation, art handling, condition reporting, and fine art object management experience and conservation practices preferred.
    Experience teaching in a college and or graduate programming preferred.  

COMPETENCIES

    Demonstrated ability in financial/ budgetary processes (analysis and reporting) required.
    Experience with programmatic assessment and evaluation preferred.
    Exceptional organizational skills required. Must be able to oversee complex projects and schedules, maintain deadlines, work within budgets, with the ability to set priorities and manage several projects simultaneously required. Ability to successfully manage a workload that balances long-range planning with the unanticipated daily demands of art exhibition spaces required.
    Excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to synthesize and accurately present relevant information required. Marketing and communications experience including digital communications such as developing web content related to exhibition programming preferred.
    Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies required. Experience working closely with faculty, students, staff, artists, and community members preferred.
    Knowledge of work environments with large University research institutions preferred.
    Familiarity with and experience working in a variety of civic arts organizations preferred.
    Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

Mental Demands

    Organizational and human relations skills with ability to collaborate well and supportively and cultivate good relationships with various constituencies.
    The temperament to work with a diverse and demanding population is expected.
    Must be self-directed and self-motivated, able to set goals and develop projects.

Physical Demands

    The successful oversight of visual arts exhibition in an 180,000 square foot facility requires the ability to conduct regular building rounds and stand for extended periods of time.
    Considerable office work.
    Occasional pushing and lifting of equipment. Some light lifting (10 to 50 lbs) is required.
    Drive off site to local vendors, galleries, etc.
    Light construction (wall hangings, etc.); climb a 15' a-frame ladder to assist with gallery installations.
    Ability to occasionally travel out of town.

Program Overview

The goal of the Individual Artists Program (IAP) is to discover, nurture, and expand Chicago’s practicing artists and creative professionals. Through this grant program, DCASE will award project-based grants to Chicago-based artists and creative professionals over 18 years of age, at all career levels (emerging, mid-career, mature), and working across numerous disciplines. Funds are awarded through two separate IAP programs: Track 1: Creative Projects and Track 2: Professional Development. Artists may only apply for and receive one grant in one of the two funding tracks per year.

General IAP Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply for funding in either of the two Individual Artists Programs, applicants must meet each of the following criteria:

•  Be professional, practicing artists or creatives in one of the following disciplines: Visual Arts (includes Graphic Artists), Music, Dance, Theater, Performance Art, Literary Arts, Design (includes fashion, industrial, and costume), Curatorial Arts, Culinary Arts, Media Arts/Film and Interdisciplinary; and

•  Be at least 18 years old; and

•  Be a United States citizen or a holder of permanent alien status; and

•  Be a resident of the city of Chicago, Illinois (proof of residency is required for application).

Beginning in 2013, Artists may receive an IAP award for three consecutive years before being required to take a year off from funding. All grantees receiving support through the 2013 and 2014 IAP are eligible to apply for funding in either track in 2015.
Track 1: Creative Projects

Goal: To support practicing artists and creative professionals in the development or creation of experimental, risk-taking creative projects that seeks to elevate and advance their careers and expose them to new audiences. This program is partially supported by a Grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Key Points:

•  Program Priorities:

o  Experimental, innovative, risk-taking projects demonstrating a strong and original artistic/creative vision, purpose or theme

o  New work (however, applications will be accepted for both new and existing projects)

o  Work that is likely to be highly impactful for an artist’s career

o  Projects proposed by emerging artists

o  Projects seeking to increase public access to and participation in high-quality arts activities/events (especially underrepresented populations)

•  Grant Amount: DCASE will accept requests up to $5,000. Grant amounts typically range from $2,000 to $5,000; the average grant size in 2014 was $4,000.

•  If awarded, grant funds provided through Track 1 must be spent between January 1, 2015 and August 31, 2015. Funded activities must originate and be completed during the grant period; the entire project does not need to be completed during this time period.

•  All proposed projects must have a public component or include some public “presentation” of the work (i.e., performances, exhibitions, presentations, showings, publications) for residents of the City of Chicago residents.This public component need not occur within the grant period, but plans to share your work with the Chicago public must be articulated in the grant application for the proposed project, along with clear marketing/outreach plans to ensure audiences will know about your work.

•  Artists working collaboratively on a project are eligible to submit a single application to support the work; however, one collaborator must serve as the main contact for purposes of the application.

•  Funds may not be used for applicants to pay themselves or for capital purchases or the purchase of permanent, depreciable equipment valued at more than $250.

 
Track 2: Professional Development

Goal: To support professional artists and creative entrepreneurs to develop and expand their audience, promote/gain more exposure for their work, strengthen and sustain their career/business, develop administrative or organizational skills, receive technical assistance, or other projects that help them to become more competitive in the creative marketplace.

Key Points:

•  Program Priorities:

o  Unique opportunities likely to be highly impactful for an artist’s career

o  Timeliness: Opportunities that clearly align with the current stage of the artist’s career

•  Grant Amount: DCASE will accept requests up to $2,500.

•  Applications will be reviewed through an expedited process to allow for more timely release of funds to participate in opportunities.

•  If awarded, grant funds provided through this program must be spent as follows:

o  Cycle 1 Grant Period: Funds must be spent between January 1, 2015 and May 31, 2015.

o  Cycle 2 Grant Period: Funds must be spent between June 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015.

•  Artists working collaboratively on a project are eligible to submit a single application to support the work; however, one collaborator must serve as the main contact for purposes of the application.

Roman J. Witt Residency at the University of Michigan

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design

The mission of the Roman J. Witt Residency Program is to support the production of new work with assistance from the Stamps School community. The program awards one residency per academic year for a visiting artist/designer to work at the school to develop a new work in collaboration with students and faculty. A centerpiece of the residency is the open studio, a centrally located studio space that is part of the school’s main gallery where the resident carries out work in a public domain. This public visibility of the artist/designer’s process is intended as a teaching tool for the school as a whole. The residency is expected to culminate in the realization of the proposed work, as well as a presentation that summarizes the process and work accomplished.

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan is now accepting applications from both emerging and established artists/designers for the 2015–2016 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence program. Awarding one residency per academic year, the program offers visiting artists/designers the opportunity to work at the school to develop a new work in collaboration with students and faculty.

Witt Residents receive an honorarium of 20,000 USD for twelve weeks in residence served over an academic year. There is flexibility in how the time in residence is apportioned. In addition to the honorarium, residents are provided with housing, and studio space.

The School encourages applications from individuals as well as from creative teams however, please be advised that the resources listed above are finite, including the travel budget. If teams apply, the expectation is that the award will be shared between its members.

WRO 2015: Test Exposure
The aim of the WRO 2015 Biennale is to give exposure to new media art experiments, individual explorations and approaches investigating the potential of art both to affect and to reflect emerging issues in culture.

Artists are invited to submit works that take on the risks of innovation, inquiry and imagination, using original observations, contemporary technologies and procedures in the process of creating inventive forms, interpreting the present and revising the notion of the future (which no longer seems to be a clearly defined project).
 
The WRO 2015 Test Exposure Biennale is a testing ground for creative, unconstrained investigations of art's potential to react to the present and to anticipate future challenges.

The WRO Biennale: about
The WRO Media Art Biennale is the major forum for new media art in Poland, and one of the leading international art events in Central Europe. Since its inception in 1989, WRO has been presenting art forms using new media for artistic expression and communication, exploring current creative territories and building a critical perspective toward emerging issues in culture, art, society and technology.
 
The previous edition of the WRO Biennale—WRO 2013 Pioneering Values Biennale—was held at 18 sites around the city of Wrocław: museums, galleries, art house cinemas, department stores, old factory halls and public space,  where the works of over 200 artists were shown. The exhibitions, concerts, performances, video projections, installations and conferences were attended by more than a thousand accredited guests and over 110,000 visitors. Fieldwork is an internship programme that offers students, recent graduates, artists, and researchers within the field of the visual arts an exciting opportunity to become involved with the events and exhibition programme of the gallery.

Central to the internship programme is to take on an active role in the realisation of the events programme, which interrogates the themes and dialogue raised within the exhibitions at Cell Project Space. The events will either take place inside the gallery during or in between exhibitions or as adjunct off site events. Additionally the internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain work experience in all aspects of contemporary art production, ranging from the installation of exhibitions to front of house.

During exhibitions, the internship is scheduled for 3 hours per week over a period of 3 months enabling interns to fit the programme around their own timetable. During these weekly three hours, successful applicants are expected to commit to working front of house at the gallery representing the public image of the organisation and supporting the gallery manager in realising the events programme.

During installation periods and event preparations interns would be requires to increase their hours, negotiated in advance by the team to fit a planned schedule. At this point there would be an opportunity to work directly with artists and curators, be part of a team to realise an exhibition . For applicants who are keen to learn technical skills there would be opportunities to work alongside Cell’s professional technicians. During this intense period interns would expect to attend  at least four 8 hour days within a two week period

The Bemis Center currently supports artists with two inter-related residency programs: at our main campus in the Old Market, and at Carver Bank in North Omaha. For more than 30 years, the Bemis Center has supported artists through its Old Market residency program at its 110,000-square-foot main campus located in downtown Omaha’s historic Old Market neighborhood. These residencies provide artists from around the world with long-term opportunities to focus on their practice and to engage in critical dialogue with the Bemis Center community. Sept. 9 – Dec. 9, 2015: The Future of Food Production and Consumption

In Fall 2015, Bemis Center Old Market residencies will have a thematic focus for the first time: the future of food production and consumption. Contemporary artists from all backgrounds and all practice areas are encouraged to apply. Applicants for this cycle should demonstrate an interest in the research, development, or execution of work that explores the role of food broadly understood, including, but not limited to: farming, urban agriculture, the relationship of food to our bodies, food justice, food as culture, the nexus between food and environment, and bio-engineering and other technological interventions in the food cycle. Through this call, the Bemis Center hopes to construct a cohort of artists interested in exploring cultural, environmental, and scientific aspects of growing, cooking, eating and sharing food.

In addition to juried artists, the Bemis has invited leaders in the field to join the cohort in order to pursue their own practices and/or to lead workshops, seminars and other public programs that address this thematic. Visiting artists will include: Shu Lea Cheang (Paris) who constructs networked installations and multi-player performances in a collective mode, often involving food; Claire Pentacost (Chicago) whose projects often address the contested boundary between the natural and the artificial, focusing in recent years on food, agriculture and bio­engineering; Fallen Fruit (Los Angeles), a collective that develops public performances and site specific installations, using fruit as shared language through which to explore the margins of urban space, systems of community and narrative real-time experience; Mel Ziegler (Nashville), who currently is developing a model for addressing critical environmental issues in western Nebraska through dialogue between artists and the farmers and ranchers of the Sandhills region; and FoAM (Brussels), whose speculative research explores and prototypes possible futures of food while remaining firmly rooted in existing cultural traditions.

We are pleased to announce that one ceramic artist whose practice includes functional pottery will be selected for the Future of Food Production & Consumption residency cycle, and will be awarded a cash prize of $10,000, courtesy of Betty Woodman and the Woodman Family Foundation Prize.  There is no additional application process or entry needed to be considered for this prize."

 

Jan. 13 – Mar. 2, 2016: Contemporary Art (and Parenthood)

The contemporary art world rarely acknowledges the impact that parenthood has on artistic work, or makes provision to support artists who also have obligations to meet as parents. For this cycle, the Bemis invites contemporary artists who are parents to apply, regardless of the specific focus or nature of their artistic practice.

During Contemporary Art (and Parenthood), the Bemis will alter its visitation policies so that children (and spouses or partners who share in parenting responsibilities) may stay with the resident artist in her or his studio for the entire six week residency, or any portion thereof. Each resident artist will be provided with private living space for themselves and their families as well as separate workspace on the Bemis main campus.

The Bemis will provide on-site child care as mutually agreed during this residency cycle.

What is the School of Sound?
The School of Sound is a biennial symposium created to encourage a cross-disciplinary approach to using sound in the arts and media. We explore what sound does, how audiences listen. It is a place where you can raise your awareness of how audio production works, how it conveys information and emotion, how you can work with it.
 
For four days you'll be immersed in a world of imagination, invention and innovation. Listening to presentations from a diversity of incredible talents, you will be able to disconnect from your day-to-day work, taken out of your comfort zone, to reflect on sound as something that is profoundly complex, entertaining and important.
 
Why attend the School of Sound?
The SOS is not an academic conference and it is not about how to get a job. It is a rare opportunity to hear and meet 20 creatives working at the highest levels of the arts and media speaking in detail about how they think and work.
 
And the SOS is not about just one area of sound production. The programme covers film, theatre, dance, opera, games, installation, music and radio - expanding your thinking and increasing your ability to work across diverse genres and forms of production.
