It happens to the best of us: the gallery won’t pay, your work got damaged, the curator spelled your name so wrong even your mother doesn’t recognize it in the press release. We all have horror stories, but they don’t have to end in tragedy. Most problems are avoidable, IF you know how to protect yourself. And even when something totally unexpected goes awry, there are ways to diffuse problems before they get worse, or solve them for good.
 
In this 5-week seminar we will discuss real artist horror stories---and there are some hair-raising, juicy tales---and how they could have been avoided or handled better. These stories will be the framework for learning concrete skills for managing the day-to-day reality of being an artist, including: shipping and insurance issues; consignment, loan and other common legal agreements; negotiation and diplomacy; gallery and other professional relationships; broken promises; dirty dealing; and of course, money.
 
Each participant may submit to three burning questions or horror stories upon enrollment which will be addressed over the five sessions. No matter how crazy the problem is, it will get covered.
 
This seminar is not about websites, résumés, schmoozing, or how to get a gallery. It’s for working artists who want to stop wasting energy and time wondering how to handle confusing situations, and get back to doing what they love: making art.
