We are pleased to announce the exhibition SPIEGELSAAL by Dimitris Tzamouranis (b. 1967, Kalamata, Greece).
In his first solo exhibition at Wohnmaschine, the artist is presenting his current series of works and establishing concrete local connections to his adopted city of residence, Berlin, by transporting the scenery of his large-format oil paintings to the hall of mirrors of Ballhaus Mitte in Berlin.
In his choice of copperplates as a painting surface, Tzamouranis is employing a technique that derives from traditional religious painting in which paintings were copied on small copperplates that could be easily transported. Tzamouranis primarily exploits the nature of the material to depict architectural elements and to associate the mirror or mirroring as a quotation from the cultural and art history. Tzamouranis thereby addresses questions of the reflection on perception between vision and the reality of looking at images.
With a good bit of pictorial magic, painters today proceed against the postmodern iconoclasm of reference that continued the disenchantment and secularization of the image latent to modernism. This seems to be a decisive moment in the work of Tzamouranis. The characteristic aspect of a painting that neither does justice to the hegemonic claim of early modernity's visual and representative art of mimetic similarity, nor modernism's referential art to produce image signs (think here of Magritte) moves to the center of attention. Less the narrative content of the painting, certainly present, nor the referential character of the means used (indexicality) are of primary significance, but the fact that the image is able to take up its status as depiction and critique the beholder's gaze in the very moment he or she looks at the picture. Tzamouranis' images produce a real presence. His beholders are grasped by the gazes present.??Sotirios Bahtsetzis
By going beyond an illusionistic, naturalistic manner, Tzamouranis's painting leads from immediate translation of reality to an imagination that is inspired by reality but goes far beyond it. His paintings feature forms and figures that deviate from the conventional, visible order of the surroundings and constitute a new, displaced reality. The iconographic design of these magical, imaginative paintings is inseparably connected to a psychologizing and self-examination that the artist constantly pursues. With his paintings of ideas and dreams, he tears things from their natural contexts of space-time and forms them into phantasms. By confronting disparate ideas of reality the artist creates his personal cosmogony that holds up a distorting mirror to reality. - Sven Nommensen
A solo exhibition of Dimitris Tzamouranis will open on October 26, 2006, at the Kunstverein Buchholz, Nordheide, and run in parallel with the exhibition SPIEGELSAAL.
