English below Franz West Almine Rech Gallery, Bruxelles Vernissage le jeudi 25 mars, de 18h � 21h Du 26 mars au 22 mai 2010 La Galerie Almine Rech Bruxelles consacre pour la premi�re fois une exposition aux �uvres r�centes de Franz West. N� � Vienne en 1947 o� il vit et travaille, Franz West est l�un des protagonistes majeurs de la sc�ne artistique internationale. Franz West a �tudi� � l�Acad�mie des Beaux-Arts de Vienne. Lorsqu�il d�bute (durant les ann�es 60), l�Actionnisme Viennois domine la sc�ne artistique autrichienne. L�int�r�t de ce mouvement pour le corps et la performance trouve un �cho dans son travail, m�me si West s�affirme en r�action contre l�Actionnisme. En 1974, il r�alise ses premi�res �Pa�st�cke�, (�Adaptives�), une s�rie de petites sculptures fabriqu�es � l�aide de bois et fragments de grillages recouverts de papier m�ch� peint en blanc, con�ues pour �tre manipul�es ou port�es par le visiteur. Ces pi�ces modestes, d�lib�r�ment sans s�duction, et interactives caract�risent la d�marche de Franz West, qui se revendique des th�ories de Joseph Beuys, et d�clare : �le Pa�st�ck est un processus primaire de l�art�. Certaines de ces sculptures, transpos�es en grandes dimensions deviendront � la fin des ann�es 90, d��normes pi�ces ou installations en aluminium. Ces �uvres prolongent les relations formelles et conceptuelles des Pa�st�cke : elles sont r�alis�es dans les m�mes mat�riaux � la fois humbles et bruts en apparence, et explorent la relation au corps, tout comme le rapport au social. En 1989, pour une exposition � PS1 � New York, West installe des divans de m�tal dans les espaces de transitions entre les diff�rentes salles ! du lieu. Les chaises et les divans seront les �l�ments centraux de son installation � la Documenta 1992 de Kassel, installations fonctionnelles d�lib�r�ment d�routantes pour le spectateur invit� � les utiliser librement, et d�pla�ant de fait la perception de l��uvre. Aujourd�hui les propositions de Franz West abordent les pratiques de la peinture, de la sculpture dont des pi�ces monumentales pour l'exterieur, de l'installation. Pour son exposition � la Galerie Almine Rech de Bruxelles, Franz West montrera un choix de pi�ces r�centes parmi lesquelles de la peinture, sculpture dont des pi�ces monumentales pour l'exterieur, de l'installation, ainsi qu�un travail en collaboration avec l�artiste autrichien Rudolf Polanszky. Fran�oise-Claire Prodhon Franz West Almine Rech Gallery, Brussels from 26 March till 22 May 2010 Opening 25 March, 06-09PM For the first time, the Almine Rech Gallery Brussels is devoting an exhibition to recent works by Franz West. Born in 1947 in Vienna, where he lives and works, West is one of the key figures of the international art scene. Franz West studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. When he started out in the sixties, Viennese Actionism dominated the Austrian art scene. This movement�s focus on the body and performance echoes throughout his oeuvre, though West himself claims his work is a reaction against Actionism. In 1974, he created his first �Pa�st�cke� (�Fitting Pieces� or �Adaptives�), a series of small sculptures made of wood and fragments of wire netting covered in papier m�ch� painted in white. These sculptures were designed to be manipulated or worn by visitors. These modest and interactive pieces, deliberately stripped of any appeal, distinguish the artist�s approach. Indeed, West, who claims to follow Joseph Beuys� theories, has stated that �the Pa�st�ck is a primary process of art�. In the late nineties, some of these sculptures, redeveloped on a large scale, would become outsize aluminium pieces or installations. These works extend the formal and conceptual relations of the Pa�st�cke: made with the same materials � which are, in appearance, both humble and raw � they explore the relation to the body as well as to social issues. In 1989, on the occasion of an exhibition at PS1 in New York, West installed metal sofas in the passageways between the venue�s different rooms. Th! e sofas and chairs would become the central elements of his installation at the 1992 Documenta in Kassel. These functional installations were intended to disconcert spectators, who were invited to use them as they so pleased, thereby shifting the perception of the work. Today Franz West�s statements cover the practices of painting and sculpture, as well as installations and monumental outdoor pieces. For his exhibition at the Almine Rech Gallery in Brussels, Franz West will present a selection of recent pieces, including paintings, sculptures, outdoor pieces, as well as a joint work by West and austrian artist Rudolf Polanszky.
