Maria Eichhorn Ausstellung vom 4.-26. April 2008 Die Galerie Barbara Weiss zeigt Werke von Maria Eichhorn aus den Jahren 2001�2007, die im Kontext von Biennalen und anderen Ausstellungsprojekten entstanden sind. Die erste Ausstellung von Maria Eichhorn in der Galerie Barbara Weiss fand 1991 statt und rief internationale Resonanz hervor. Die Galerie wurde mit salzhaltigem Nebel gef�llt und in eine Klimakammer verwandelt. Seitdem nahm Eichhorn an wichtigen/richtungsweisenden Ausstellungen und Biennalen teil und ist in zahlreichen Sammlungen vertreten. Ihr komplexes und vielschichtiges Werk entzieht sich einer eindeutigen Kategorisierung. Die Arbeit �Joint Account No. 1711601, Bank of Fukuoka, Yahata Branch 411� entstand f�r die Yokohama Triennale 2001. Eichhorn verwendete ihr Produktionsbudget f�r ein Gemeinschaftskonto, welches frei verf�gbar und allgemein nutzbar war. BesucherInnen der Triennale konnten Geld von diesem Konto abheben und/oder auf das Konto einzahlen. In der Ausstellung ist das Kontobuch mit den Ein- und Auszahlungen zu sehen. Die Arbeit �Prohibited Imports� (2003) bezieht sich konkret auf die Praxis der japanischen Zollbeh�rde, B�cher beim Import der Zensur zu unterziehen. In den Jahren 2000�2002 wurden mehrere P�ckchen mit B�chern von Berlin nach Tokio geschickt, darunter das Buch �Mapplethorpe. Die gro�e Werkmonographie�, das zensiert wurde. Nach Ausstellungsstationen in Japan und Kanada wird die Arbeit zum ersten Mal in Europa gezeigt. Der Videofilm �Billboard Istanbul Biennial 1995� entstand f�r die Istanbul Biennale 2005. Der Film bezieht sich auf Eichhorns Beitrag f�r die Istanbul Biennale 1995 zehn Jahre zuvor, der darin bestand, eine Plakatwand mit politischen Plakaten auf dem Taksimplatz in Istanbul aufzustellen. Subkulturelle und linke Gruppierungen aus Istanbul wurden von Eichhorn eingeladen, Plakate f�r die Plakatwand zu entwerfen. Der Film beleuchtet die politischen Hintergr�nde, die 1995 zum zweimaligen Ab- und Wiederaufbau der Plakatwand f�hrten. Die Arbeit �von 12,37 bis 36,08 = 24,94 von 100 %� besteht aus einem Pr�sentationsdisplay und einem Buch, das einen �berblick �ber alle Teilnehmerinnen des Grazer Festivals �Steirischer Herbst� von seinen Anf�ngen im Jahr 1968 bis 2007 gibt. Eichhorn entwarf das Display f�r eine Buchhandlung, die ausschlie�lich dieses Buch zum Kauf anbietet. Anl�sslich der Grazer Ausstellung wurde die Buchhandlung von Frauen aus feministischen Zusammenh�ngen betrieben. Das Buch ist im Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther K�nig erschienen. Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein von Maria Eichhorn zusammengestellter Reader mit umfangreichem Text- und Bildmaterial. Maria Eichhorn (*1962 Bamberg) lebt in Berlin. Seit 2003 Professorin an der Universit�t der K�nste in Z�rich. 1992 wurde ihr der George-Maciunas-Preis und 2002 der Arnold-Bode-Preis verliehen. Interviews with Carl Andre, Daniel Buren, Hans Haacke, Jenny Holzer, Adrian Piper, Robert Ryman, Jackie Winsor, u.a.�, herausgegeben von Gerti Fietzek. ________________________________________________ Maria Eichhorn Exhibition from April 4 - 26, 2008 Galerie Barbara Weiss is showing works by Maria Eichhorn from the years 2001�2007, which the artist created for biennials and other exhibition projects. Maria Eichhorn�s first exhibition at Galerie Barbara Weiss took place in 1991 and attracted international interest. The gallery was filled with a salty fog and transformed into a climatic chamber. Since then Eichhorn has taken part in important and pioneering exhibitions and biennials and her works are included in many collections. Her complex and multi-facetted work cannot be simply categorised. "Joint Account No. 1711601, Bank of Fukuoka, Yahata Branch 411" was produced for the Yokohama Triennial 2001. Eichhorn used her budget to set up a joint bank account that was freely accessible and open to general use. Visitors to the Triennial were able to withdraw or pay in money and the transactions were registered in an account book on show at the exhibition. "Prohibited Imports" (2003) refers explicitly to the Japanese customs authorities� practice of censoring imported books. In the years 2000�2002 several packages with books were sent from Berlin to Tokyo, including the monograph on Robert Mapplethorpe, "Mapplethorpe. Die gro�e Werkmonographie", which was censored. Eichhorn�s project has been exhibited at venues in Japan and Canada, and is now to be shown in Europe for the first time. The video film "Billboard Istanbul Biennial 1995" was created for the Istanbul Biennial 2005. The film refers to Eichhorn�s own contribution to the Istanbul Biennial 1995 ten years previously, which had consisted of erecting a billboard with political posters on Taksim Square in Istanbul. Eichhorn invited subcultural and left-wing groups from Istanbul to design posters for the billboard. This film investigates the political context that led in 1995 to the billboard twice being taken down and then reinstated. "von 12,37 bis 36,08 = 24,94 von 100 %" consists of a presentation display and a book that provide an overview of all the women who participated in the Graz festival "Steirischer Herbst" from its beginnings in 1968 to 2007. Eichhorn designed the display for a bookshop that only had this book on offer, and this shop was run by women from feminist backgrounds during the Graz exhibition. The book was published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther K�nig. For this exhibition Maria Eichhorn has compiled an accompanying reader with extensive text and picture documentation.
