Deimantas Narkevicius The Dud Effect 30. Oktober - 20. Dezember 2008 Ausstellungser�ffnung: Mittwoch, 29. Oktober 2008, 18-21 Uhr �ffnungszeiten: Di-Sa, 11-18 Uhr Die Werke des in Vilnius lebenden litauischen Film- und Videok�nstlers Deimantas Narkevicius (geb. 1964) befassen sich mit Wahrnehmung von Geschichte, reflektiert aus einer aktuellen und subjektiven Perspektive. Dabei verkn�pft der K�nstler mit unterschiedlichen filmischen Strategien und narrativer Vorgehensweise bestimmte Str�nge historischer Entwicklung mit pers�nlichen Erfahrungen und verflechtet die im Mittelpunkt stehenden Menschen mit ihrem urbanen und �konomischen Umfeld. Narkevicius, der gelernter Bildhauer ist, versteht das Filmemachen als das Anfertigen von digitalen Skulpturen. Es geht ihm darum, Orte zu definieren und deren spezifische Struktur herauszuarbeiten. Die Galerie Barbara Weiss freut sich, unter dem Titel The Dud Effect erstmalig eine Einzelpr�sentation des international erfolgreichen K�nstlers zu zeigen. Seitdem Narkevicius Litauen auf der 49. Biennale in Vendig 2001 vertreten hat, erlangte er unter anderem durch seine Ausstellung an der Akademie der K�nste Berlin im Jahr 2006 und als Teilnehmer der Skulptur Projekte M�nster 07 mit dem Film Once in the XX Century gro�e Aufmerksamkeit. Erst k�rzlich wurde dem K�nstler vom Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam f�r sein Werk der Vincent Award 2008 verliehen. Im Dezember wird die Einzelausstellung The Unanimous Life des K�nstlers im Museo Nacional De Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid er�ffnet, die ab Februar 2009 im Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, zu sehen sein wird. In der Ausstellung The Dud Effect pr�sentiert Deimantas Narkevicius sein erstes Werk, Europa 54� 54' � 25� 19', aus dem Jahr 1997, in Kombination mit dem zuletzt enstandenen Film The Dud Effect, 2008. �The Dud� ist eine Bombe, die nicht explodiert. Der Drehort des Films befindet sich auf einer verlassenen sowjetischen Raketenabwehrbasis in Litauen. W�hrend des Kalten Krieges wurden hier Nuklearraketen der Kategorie R 12 aufgestellt, die gen Westen gerichtet waren. Zus�tzlich zu archivarischem Fotomaterial dieser Zeit benutzt Narkevicius Aufnahmen von der halbzerst�rten Raketenabwehrbasis und ihren enormen unterirdischen Katakomben. Der Hauptdarsteller des Films, Evgeny Terentiev, ist ehemaliger Offizier und hat an einem solchen milit�rischen Standort in Litauen gedient. Er f�hrt den Abschuss einer Nuklearrakete des Typs R 12 mit den zugeh�rigen Kommandos vor, an die er sich noch erinnert. Neben einer �u�erst pr�zisen fiktionalen Nachstellung eines Raketenabschusses, reinszeniert in der Jetztzeit, geht es in The Dud Effect auch um das filmische Abtasten dieses sehr gro�en Raketenabschuss-Territoriums. Die Intention des K�nstlers ist es, die psychologische Wahrnehmung und gleichzeitige Best�rzung �ber eine solche Tat und ihres Ausma�es zu �bermitteln. Europa 54� 54' � 25� 19' ist eine im 16 mm-Format gedrehte Filmdokumentation einer Autofahrt des K�nstlers an einem Freitagvormittag in den 90er Jahren, von seiner damaligen Wohnung hin zum geographischen Zentrum Europas. Der im Soundtrack angelegte Erz�hlduktus verr�t dabei die Motivation, die hinter diesem Ausflug steckt. Die Kamera f�hrt durch unspektakul�re Gegenden von Vilnius hin zu dem Zielort, der nur einige Kilometer ausserhalb von Vilnius liegt. Using various film and narrative strategies, Narkevicius combines a number of strands of historical development with personal experience, linking the people he films with the context of their urban and economic environments. Narkevicius studied sculpture, and he sees film making as the production of digital sculptures. His aim is to identify and define specific places with their own specific structures. Galerie Barbara Weiss is pleased to be showing our first solo show by the internationally renowned artist, entitled The Dud Effect. Narkevicius represented Lithuania at the 49th Biennale in Venice in 2001, and has since attracted considerable attention � with his exhibition at the Berlin Akademie der K�nste in 2006 and as a participant in Skulptur Projekte M�nster 07, with his film Once in the XX Century. Most recently, Narkevicius received the Vincent Award 2008 from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, in recognition of his oeuvre to date. In December he will be presenting a solo show entitled The Unanimous Life at the Museo Nacional De Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, and this will then move on to the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven in February 2009. In The Dud Effect Deimantas Narkevicius is showing his first work, Europa 54� 54' � 25� 19', made in 1997, and also his most recent film, The Dud Effect, made in 2008. A dud is a bomb that does not explode. The film is set on a deserted former Soviet missile base in Lithuania. During the Cold War category R12 nuclear missiles were stationed here that were aimed at the West. Narkevi�ius combines archive photo material with new film of the now semi-decrepit missile base and its enormous underground catacombs. The main protagonist, Evgeny Terentiev, is a former officer who served at a military base in Lithuania, like the one shown in the film. He demonstrates the firing of an R12 nuclear missile, following the exact sequence of commands as he recalls it. The Dud Effect thus shows a very precise fictional recreation of the firing of a missile, but staged for a contemporary audience, and it also presents a detailed exploration in film of the landscape with the remains of the massive missile base. The intention of the artist is to show the psychological perception and also consternation at the extent of the destruction that was possible. Europa 54� 54' � 25� 19' is a 16 mm documentary film of a car journey the artist made one Friday morning in the 1990s, from his apartment at the time to the geographical centre of Europe. The narrative tone of the soundtrack reveals the reason for this excursion. The camera takes us through very ordinary parts of the city of Vilnius to the destination, which is just a few kilometres beyond the city outskirts. Deimantas Narkevicius / Charlotte von Carmer |
