This work unifies documentary footage (Barlow) from Jenin and Israel fused with a Hebrew transcription (Buckley/Cullen) of the 638 members of the military group Courage to Refuse. The visual component has a sonic accompaniment (Crawforth) offsetting the original sounds recorded in the Middle East. The text, sound and moving image are rendered to reflect the radical contrasts and tensions existing in contemporary Israeli-Palestinian territories. Katie Barlow, John Buckley, David Crawforth and Shane Cullen were commissioned by Beaconsfield in 2006 to present a collaborative work under the umbrella of the Culture & Conflict Group (established Chicago 1998). Courage to Refuse, the DVD was first presented at Emily Tsingou Gallery as part of A Selected State. Art & Compromise III Mark Sealy Wednesday, 11 February, 2009 at 2pm in Galley One Beaconsfield, 22 Newport Street, London SE11 6AY The third lecture in the Art & Compromise series is salient in the light of the paradigm shift we are witnessing within global politics. In The Organ that Weeps, Mark Sealy will discuss, through his work at Autograph ABP, issues relating to race, representation and human rights. Mark Sealy is the Director of Autograph ABP � the Association of Black Photographers. The curator of several international photography exhibitions, he has commissioned artists globally and initiated the production of over forty publications, including Different, his critically acclaimed book project with Professor Stuart Hall. Sealy has a special interest in the relationship of photography to social change and identity politics. The talk will offer a great opportunity to view material from the vast Autograph archive. How does one bear witness to the criminality of societal rule, which consigns the uniqueness of being to eternal forgetfulness, not through an act of dramatic transgression but through a descent into everyday life? Thus, how does one not simply articulate loss through a dramatic gesture of defiance but learn to inhabit the world, or inhabit it again, in a gesture of mourning? It is in this context that one may identify the eye not as the organ that sees but as the organ that weeps. Veena Das, author of �Violence and the Descent into the Ordinary�. The Art & Compromise series, delivered in partnership with City & Guilds of London Art School, addresses the various forms and occasions when compromise might enter into art-practice and the criteria that might be used to condemn or commend these effects. Mark Sealy follows excellent presentations in the series by artist Gustav Metzger and Contemporary Art Society Director, Paul Hobson. Art & Compromise III coincides with the exhibition of Courage to Refuse (20 January-15 March 2009), a Beaconsfield commission on DVD by Katie Barlow/John Buckley/David Crawforth/Shane Cullen. Gallery Three 15mm Films The Way Out, 2009 25-March>14 June The Way Out is a fictional disability terrorist organisation that has been fighting for the rights of disabled people whilst adding to their number by randomly mail-bombing the public...now cornered in their bunker by a police stake-out, there seems to be no way out. The hours loom in as the siege intensifies, dysfunction and schism set in. Outside, in the real world, the revolution is being televised... 15mm leads Disability politics with their irreverent, can-do approach to disability. The Way Out is a Beaconsfield commission supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Arts & Humanities Research Council.
