GEERT GOIRIS UNFATHOMABLE 2 May to 27 June 2015 Belfast Exposed is pleased to present the first major solo exhibition of work by Belgian photographer, Geert Goiris in the UK and Ireland. Geert Goiris can be seen as a contemporary explorer in search of new landscapes and new ways of seeing. Many of his photographs depict remote and unfamiliar places – deserts, polar regions, mountains, forests – in a way that is stark and atmospheric. The work is both documentary – coolly descriptive and without sentiment – and allegorical, in that it draws on the tradition of the pictorial sublime, while at the same time querying it. Unfathomable is an installation of images which centres on the idea of the abyss, of a deep, immeasurable space. We are presented with a range of scenes including vast and forbidding wildernesses frozen in time, an atmospheric phenomenon which conjures multiple suns, a black hole and a mega-city subsumed in vegetation. Goiris’ photographs are both spectacular and banal, full of incongruous elements and anomalies. They conspire to form a dark, interior world, a bleak and haunting contemporary view. Artist Talk Geert Goiris will give an artist talk at 6pm on Friday 1st May Biography Geert Goiris (b. 1971, Belgium). Recent solo exhibitions include FOAM, Amsterdam (2015), VOX, Montreal (2014) and Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (2013). Publications include Proliferation (2014) and Lying Awake (2013) by Roma Publications. Geert Goiris is represented by Art: Concept, Paris and Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussels. Acknowledgements This exhibition is generously supported by Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council. --- BELFAST EXPOSED FUTURES ALBERTO MASERIN 1 May to 27 June 2015 Belfast Exposed Futures is a new gallery space dedicated to showing the best new photographic talent from Northern Ireland. Interferences is the first exhibition to launch in the Belfast Exposed Futures gallery, a new space dedicated to emerging photography from Northern Ireland. Over the past two years Alberto Maserin has documented the influence of a U.S. military base on a small town in Italy. The base was established during the Cold War in 1955 and is still active. The parameters of the base are securely guarded and secrecy shrouds the site. As a result, it has become a source of much speculation for the local population. Maserin has extensively documented the area and its inhabitants. His quiet photographs observe the uncomfortable relationship between the military installation and its surroundings. The work also examines the psychological implications of this site on the local imagination. The exhibition will be accompanied by a limited edition print that will be available for purchase. |
